� Had a brother William Henry and sister Rosaile � Entered University of Virginia, but dropped out after a year because he couldn�t pay off gambling debts, broke off his engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster. � Enlisted in the army to make money, already had written his first book Tamerlane � Left/ dismissed from West Point because of disobedience of orders. � 1936 Poe married his cousin Virginia Clemm, she was 13. but in 1942 a blood vessel burst which lead to her death from tuberculosis. Lead to Poe�s Alcoholic ways and drug use � After leaving went to live with his aunt and cousin in Baltimore, they all soon moved to Virginia, this is where Poe first began writing fictional stories. � Poe then went to New York and Philadelphia and then Back to New York, here he tried to establish himself as a literary journalists � Known as the �father� of the detective stories and master of horror. � Poe succeeded in writing short narratives; this is what Poe is most noted for. He constructed numerous stories some of which are Ligeia perhaps his finest The Fall of the House of Usher; some consider The Murders in Rue Morgue the first detective story. His musical stories consisted The Raven and The Bells. � The death of his aunt was one of the most traumatic times in his life. Furthered his alcoholism. � Up till his death Poe struggled with depression and attempted suicide in 1848 � When he died he was discovered lying outside a pub in Baltimore, trembling and raving. He was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead three days later, due to excessive drinking and slipping into a coma � For all of Poe�s life he was a private man, much of his life while at West Point and UV is not known � One of the most talented writers in history, he was able to cross into several genres including, science fiction, murder mystery and fantasies. His ability to write in all genres made in the writer he was. � Poe wrote hundreds of short storied and poems to go along with longer stories and prose. � Poe is easily the most complicated figure in American history literature his stories often extremely in depth and thought provoking. |
