With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change.

This quote symbolizes the way that the people of at Gatsbys parties act. Their material possessions mean so much to them that they act only according to what they wear. They are so caught up in the material world and how they appear to others. When Mrs. Wilson changed clothes her entire background and her status in the world changed. Just like Myrtle, she lives a alife as well. When she is with Tom, her lover, she thinks that she is apart of high society she spend his money and buys the Town Tattle so that she can catch up on all the news that the rich know about. She goes around spending Toms money on everything she sees. She wants it all. However her real life is far from it. IN her real life she is not able to go around and aimlessly spend money, but with the flip of a switch she becomes a high class snob. Myrtle feels that she is so important when she is with Tom because he is from the prestigious East Egg. People from East Egg are the top notch high class more important than everyone else therefore she feels like this when she is with Tom.

The carelessness of the rich.  (attitude, automobile, etc.)

The high class is so absorbed in there image that the base there life around it. Many of the characters have double lives in which, in one life they are poor and struggling, while the other the have no regard of anything monetary. Gatsby however is the idol of the by class. The statement about Gatsby by Catherine I believe sums it up very well. I Im scared of him. Id hate to have him get anything on me.
When characters like Mrs. Wilson and Myrtle, go around living double lives you see the effect it has on the people. If you are not high class you are nothing.  When Nick is personally invited to one of Gatsbys parties he feels extremely important. He knows that most of the people are never even invited the just come. So when he is invited he feels he has made it. When Nick and Daisy reunite, she talks about home. Where they both lived, and she asks Do they miss me? as if they should, when Tom first talks to Nick the first words are Ive got a nice place here these quotes show that they are snobby and cocky about what they have.

Rumors and theories about character. Gossip and its impact on people.

Everyone has their own theory about The Great Gatsby and how he got all of him money. Gatsby never worries about money he throws top notch parties, with no expenses sparred, on a regular basis. From the beginning of the book it is told that Gatsby has a deep almost obsessive love with Daisy, they did have a flame but it is now over, clearly he wants her back though. The first theory of how Gatsby got his money, is that he was either a cousin or nephew of Kaiser Wilhelm. This theory is told by Catherine to Nick, when they talk about where he lives. Gatsby partied most of his life, he hired everyone to do everything for him. He does everything first class. Gatsby aimed to please everyone that he meets and is around. Another theory about his wealth is that he was paid off by the German Government to be a spy against America however some dispute that with just the opposite; working for America against Germany. All the people on the Eggs do not seem to care how Gatsby got his money as long as he throws partied for them. But for Gatsby he looks for more, he looks for love
