MIRACLES

CHAPTER 7

Jax stood staring into the mirror for what seemed like forever, trying to convince himself to cancel on dinner. How was he going to sit across from her all night? The whole situation was a huge gamble, but then again it always had been when it came to Brenda. It was something that he never truly understood when they first met; back then he thought he was invincible, someone in control of every situation. But the day he met Brenda, everything he thought he knew about himself was tested. Maybe it had been her laugh, or maybe her smile that captured him but whatever it was he was hooked from the very beginning and now was no different. Even now after all that happened between them he could still feel that magnetic pull tugging at him.

“You’re a fool” he said to his reflection. “What else does she have to do to you for you to learn?”

Again he plead with himself to cancel, to save himself the obvious heartbreak that would arise from him going but the image of Brooke popped into his head. She was expecting him and he hated to disappoint her. They had so much fun this morning making breakfast together; everything had felt so right almost like it was meant to be that way and he almost forgot about all the pain. For one moment he wasn’t angry with Brenda or himself, he was just happy and free. But reality isn’t something that you can just ignore, and before he knew it everything came rushing back. Nothing was as it should have been but that was life and pretending couldn’t change it.
“Pull yourself together Jax!” he thought. After all it was only one night, he had spent two years avoiding her without incident.
“I can do this. Piece of cake” he said to his reflection but he doubted even “it” believed him.

****************

Brenda glanced at herself in the morror taking notice of how nice she looked in her favorite black dress. She was going to have to pull out all the stops to get Jax back and looking irresistible would definitely help.
“Wow!” Lois screamed as she peered through the door. “Are you trying to give him a heart attack?”
“Is it too much? Does it look like I’m trying to hard?”
“No it’s perfect Brenda! You in that dress is sure to get his heart pumping again.”
“That’s if I don’t faint first” she said as she fell on to her bed. “Lois, I don’t know what I’m doing! I have so many butterflies in my stomach I feel like I’m going to throw up!”
“Brenda just take a deep breath and try to relax.”
“What if I can’t do this Lois? What if I just make a fool of myself?”
Sensing her best friends fear, Lois walked over and took hold of Brenda’s shoulders, looking her straight in the eyes. “First of all, you CAN do this! You and Jax are made for one another and you know it and deep down so does he. Secondly, you’re not alone because I’m here, and Ned and ….”
“Mommy! Mommy! He’s here!” Brooke screamed as she ran in the room.
Brenda and Lois couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the Brooke’s announcement and gently Lois took Brenda’s face in both her hands.
“And lets just say that I’ve called for backup just in case you need it.” she said amusingly as her and Brooke winked at each other from across the room.
