| I first met this guy when he and some of the others from Northside came on a short-term trip to China. I was their team leader. I actually thought he was a bit of a hoon out for a bit of adventure at first! I discovered at the end of the trip that he actually had a huge heart for people! I got all of the team to say something on video about their trip to China. This is what he said, "I've wanted to come to China for a long time tract bombing. First time I heard about I thought yeah gotta go one day and finally I came...I guess at first I thought it was just a great adventure pretty hard core out there. ?But the thing that actually impressed me on the trip was not so much doing the work out on the streets at night but the people - meeting some of the people and talking to some of the people just in restaurants and on trains and things like that - actually talking to some of the Chinese people. And realising what beautiful people they really are, but at the same time realising that they don't know Jesus...Having a real sense of compassion for them that they need to hear - they need to hear the Gospel. And they need to know the joy that we have in our lives and the hope that we have. And so it was just that some of the people really got into my heart! And it gave me a compassion for people and a compassion for the lost. And that is probably the main thing that I got out of my trip to China." In 2002, I had the opportunity and privilege to work alongside this awesome guy and learn much from him. I learnt much from him about discipleship. He lead our International Youth Group - it was his baby! It started from a small gathering and grew to having about 30 or more people some nights from all over the world! He also had a dream to start a seeker style Bible study for those foreign students who were interested in learning about Christianity. We started with a lovely Japanese girl named Michiko. We led her through the attributes of God, which sometimes led into discussions about the Gospel. It was an awesome time! A few of us had a feeling when the ads for a Philippines team started showing up at church that he would consider something like that! He eventually made the decision to go. We are going to miss him as he's been an awesome friend and leader! A sad loss to International Youth and to his friends and a real asset to the Philippines team. Pray for him! |
