Sinking Creek
Slave labor was used to create this creek. It was used to drain
a
nearby wetland. This is an example of humans modifying their
physical environment. This creek is in a very remote area.
People
have used it to dump household items. Bullets were found on the
bridge. |
Old Versus New
Downtown Florence on Court Street is an example of the old and
the new existing side by side. Old buildings are being restored to
their
former glory. We learn from the past that improvements don't
have to
be modern to be better.

Coby Hall
Coby Hall was once the residence of Governor O'Neal. It
was
eventually donated to the University of North Alabama. It is
now
used by the University for receptions, teas, weddings, and other
special functions. The upstairs is used for classes. The
basement at
one time was used as a restaurant. The purpose of the building has
changed, but the history and character of the building still remain. |
The Big Sink
The big sink is an example of how physical systems affect
human systems. It acts as a filter for our water table. This
area is in danger of being drained to produce more farmland,
but that would have an adverse affect on the water
table.

No Till
"No till" farming is a new practice that has been estabalished to
help stop erosion on farm land. It was first called "ugly farming"
because the remainder of the previous crop is left to cover the
soil and hold it in
place during winter rains. In the spring, the new crop is planted
into the residue.. It not only stops erosion, but it builds the soil.
It is more cost effective because
it saves fuel and labor. |
