The Trip to Kenya
In December 2002, we traveled to Kenya with the Dhahran Outing Group (the DOGs). We visited four game parks, each with its own distinctive community of critters and flora. Our trip beagn with two days in Nairobi visiting the National Museum and shopping. On Christmas Eve we drove to the Aberdare Mountains for a night at the Ark, a lodge adjacent to its own water hole and salt lick. We stayed up all that night and Christmas morning watching the wildlife from the decks of the Ark. On Christmas day we crossed the equator and drove to Sumburu National Reserve. Sumburu is in an arid region and is home to several unique animal species including gerenuk, Grevy zebra, and the Beisa oryx. After two days in Sumburu, we drove to Lake Nakuru National Park. Highlights at Nakuru were the birdlife, including millions of flamingoes; white rhino; and a leopard. We then returned to Nairobi and flew to the Kichwa Tembo Lodge in the Maasai Mara. The Maasai Mara is the northern extention of the Serengeti into Kenya. We saw several lion and cheetah, took a spectacular hot air balloon ride over the Mara, and visited a Maasai village. We returned to Nairobi on New Year's Eve.
