A short story
Family History General information about the Muscogee Peoples
|
Though I am a citizen of the nation, the United States of America, I
am also a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, an indigenous tribe with its
roots in the South Eastern United States. Historical records indicate that
my Muscogee heritage was based in the tribal capital of Coweta, which
was found in western Georgia on the eastern bank of the Chattahoochee River, which
now serves as the western border of the state.
It was here that Louisa was borned to William and Polly Marshall in 1833. Just three years later, in 1836, most of the resident Muscogee citizens were rounded up and forced to march westward to Oklahoma on what is termed "The Trail of Tears." In December of 1835 the Marshalls headed west. Louisa was not pure blood. She was 75% Muscogee and 25% white. Her grandfather was Benjamin Marshall, son of Thomas Marshall II and Hitskartay. So then presuming a generational period at 18 years, William Marshall would have been borned around 1815 while his father would have been borned around 1797.
