Threads Running Through Reading Courses

At Jefferson Community College the following eight threads are the foundation for the sequence of new reading courses – RDG 010, RDG 020, RDG 030. That is, the threads below are introduced and built upon in the sequence of reading courses and provide the framework for decisions about curriculum and instruction.

Attitude, motivation –
The student’s interest in, motivation for and attitude toward reading affect reading performance.

Developing Voice –
Readers must come to realize that their own ideas have value.

Engaging schema –
To understand and remember the loner hooks information to already existing schema or networks of knowledge – networks are expanded as relationships are seen.

Imaging –
Many concepts cannot be understood if they are not imaged, especially in areas such as the sciences – Imaging makes use of background knowledge, associations, activation of schemas and helps make meaning of concepts, as well as being fun.

Metacognition –

Structural Patterns –
Reading study strategies –
Previewing, Reading and Self-testing – good readers predict, visualize and draw conclusions

Critical thinking –
Assessing the “value of information” – Reader builds on previous information – Critical thinking is at its base merely an approach to thinking.
