"In one of the hardest bouts ever staged by boys of their weight, Wolgast beat Joe Rivers decisively, had him weak and leg-weary at the final gong and was in such condition himself that he could have gone another ten rounds. It is doubtful, however, if Rivers would have been able to stand up against the Michigan boys terrible onslaught for half that distance. Old-time followers of the boxing game at the ringside declared without reserve the belief that Rivers would have been forced to take the count had the bout gone another five rounds."
