“I was beaten fairly and squarely and have no excuse to offer. I am a little disfigured, but still in the ring.” Nelson said as he addressed the crowd at the theater. “Wolgast is a great little fighter, the best I ever met, and I do not intend to detract a single bit of credit form him for the victory. I lost my title, but I am the first man in the history of pugilism that lost the championship while still on my feet. Not once in those forty rounds of the hardest kind of fighting did Wolgast hit me hard enough to knock me to my knees.”
