"Bat has a nice crop of hair and an equally fine crop of chin whiskers. Bat nevers allows a barber to work on him before a fight. There is method in this neglect. Nelson intends to use a lot of liquid on that hair to make it stand straight like needles on an enraged porcupine.
This mass of stiff hair will be aimed at Wolgast's head and chest in every rush. the telling effect has been shown in bat's fights with other men. It is bound to work in his favor today."
