Ad Wolgast July 5, 1912 San Francisco Chronicle

"On the other hand, following his sudden illness and subsequent operation for appendicitis last November, (1911) there arose the question of whether that operation would hurt Wolgast's ring career. He was signed with Rivers for the Fourth, and then by way of precaution, Tom Jones took on the four-round bout in San Francisco. The history of that match is well known. Ritchie was a distinct surprise. In the second round he scored a legitimate knockdown, but was overwhelmed by one of the well-known Wolgast rallies in the third and twice sent to the floor. Things looked serious for Ritchie, but Wolgast failed to respond in the fourth, and if anything, the honors were with Ritchie.
In that match it was agreed by fistic experts that Wolgast was lacking in judgement of distance, in strength and ability to withstand punches. Even Tom Jones looked worried through the match and after it was over."July 5, 1912 San Francisco Chronicle
