The Ad Wolgast-Willie Ritchie Bout March 12, 1914 ROUND 1 At the start, Wolgast walked in and covered. They went to a clinch and Ritchie landed a right on Wolgast's body. Wolgast covered and tried a left on Ritchie's body. Wolgast landed a right on Ritchie's nose, which drew the blood. Ritchie poked his left several times on Wolgast's head, but the latter was covered well. Ritchie hooked a left to Wolgast's chin at the bell and sent a good right to ear. Honors were even. ROUND 2 Ritchie was first to lead with a left to the body. Wolgast closed in, locked his left ann around Ritchie' s body and punched away at the champion for dear life. Ritchie hooked a left to Wolgast's neck. Wolgast closed up and mushed his gloves over Ritchie's bloody nose. They went to a clinch. Wolgast used his elbow and his head, and the crowd roared until Referee Stout pushed Wolgast away and warned him about his foul tactics. Wolgast's mouth was bleeding from a vicious left hook of the champion's glove. Wolgast came boring in with head down, and in a clinch Richie struck him several times on the body. They were mixing it fiercely at the bell. Honors belonged to the champion. ROUND 3 Ritchie was first to lead and he stabbed a good left to Wolgast's nose. Wolgast came in with folded anns and they locked arms and punched with their loose members. Wolgast used his head and the champion banged him two hard right uppercuts. Ritchie led a good left on Wolgast's mouth and banged him hard with a right on the jaw. Wolgast lashed a good left to the body, but Ritchie came back with two lefts to the jaw. Wolgast backed Ritchie to his own comer and jabbed two good lefts in the nose. Ritchie came back, however, and landed several smashing rights on Wolgast's chin. Wolgast covered his chin with his right glove and tried to stall the champion, but Ritchie had him gauged nicely and punished his head with several telling blows. It was Ritchie's round. ROUND 4 They went to a clinch when the bell rang and worked close until broke by the referee. Wolgast sent a clean left hook to the champion's body, then tore after Ritchie like a mad bull. Ritchie danced away from the fierce onslaught and a moment later soaked him with two good lefts to the head. Wolgast missed with a left, but I sent two right smashes to Ritchie's body. The blows hurt Ritchie, but he fought back with vigor. Ritchie seemed puzzled by the covered up style of Wolgast, and several times he led in a weak -hearted manner. They punched and mauled each other about the ring with Ritchie having the worst of the exchanges. Wolgast had a shade in this round. ROUND 5 They opened with a mix-up, and Wolgast got two vicious left smashes in Ritchie's stomach. Wolgast banged Ritchie with a hard right in the bodya moment later, which slowed up Ritchie. Wolgast sent another crashing left to Ritchie' s midriff, and worked close to the champion, who broke ground. Ritchie sent several lefts in the body, and complained to the referee that Wolgast was hitting low. Ritchie slammed two lefts to Wolgast's face and at the bell they were sparring. This round was Wolgast's by a fair margin. ROUND 6 Wolgast came from his comer and closed up like a jackknife. He lashed out at Ritchie with a left that missed its mark. Ritchie came back with a clean punch in the Michigan man's head, but Wolgast dashed in with aright with a crashing right chop on his neck and poked right for the body, and Ritchie punched him a vicious right, and Wolgast missed a low blow for the body. Ritchie had Wolgast missing and falling all over himself. A vicious left to Wolgast's saucer. Ritchie punched Wolgast into submission and had him breaking ground at the close of the round. ROUND 7 Wolgast came out of his comer, and, as usual, in a turtle shape defense. He banged into the champion with lowered head and flying arms. Ritchie, however, met him with a straight left. Wolgast went to his knees with a right-hand smash to his stomach. He claimed a foul but it was not allowed by the referee. He tried to get away with the claim, and several times landed below the champion' s foul line. Ritchie banged him with rights and lefts, and in clinches gave Wolgast a touch of his tough work. Wolgast was hanging on and was tired, and at the bell he wobbled to his comer, all in from a punch delivered fairly above the waistline. This round was easily Ritchie's. ROUND 8 Wolgast came from his comer and tore after Ritchie with a low blow for the body. The champion steadied him with a left to the mouth and a moment later missed a straight right for Wolgast's chin. Wolgast dug a left to Ritchie's face but a moment later Ritchie made him miss with a right-hand swing. Wolgast was using his roughhouse tactics and seemed to be satisfied to get in close and maul the champion about. Ritchie dabbed him with a straight left his mouth, and Wolgast missed a straight left to head. Ritchie soaked him again on the body, which made Wolgast groan with pain. Ritchie stabbed with his left and hooked him with the same member. This round was clearly Ritchie's. ROUND 9 They went in a clinch and both worked in close. Ritchie hit Wolgast with a hard right to the head. Wolgast tried to paw with his left, but Ritchie fanned his nose and hunched his body. Ritchie smashed Wolgast with a left and right on the jaw. Wolgast tried a right, then used his elbow to add. Wolgast again was warned by the referee for his rough tactics. Ritchie smashed Wolgast with a choppy right on the back of the neck and Wolgast came back with two punches for Ritchie's body. It was only a flash, however, for his blows lacked force, and he was unable to do any damage. They were fighting at the bell, with the honors in favor of the champion. ROUND 10 They opened up with a mix-up and Wolgast tried desperately to gain an advantage in the early part of the round. Ritchie smothered most of his punches and the force was spent from Wolgast's gloves before they landed Wolgast landed a hard right on Ritchie' s body, and a moment later crossed Ritchie with a right on the head. Ritchie came back and stood toe to toe with Wolgast. Wolgast, however, fought back desperately. but the champion came back at him and reached his body with hard rights and lefts. They mixed it fiercely, but with Wolgast fighting back gamely. At the bell they were fighting hard and the honors of the round were equally divided.
