| Seaton Independent Services for Mr. and Mrs. Shike. Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Merlin Shike were held in the Belmont Methodist church Tuesday afternoon with the pastor Rev. Paul Low officiating. The church was filled to capacity and more were outside of the church than were inside. Loud speakers carried the sermon outside. Mrs. Frank Hood and Mrs. Torrence Free sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" with Mrs. John Rowley accompanying. Mrs. Rilious Anderson, Mrs. C.C. Ash, and Mrs. Nathan Ranney were in charge of many lovely flowers. Interment was made in Memorial Park cemtery at Monmouth with Ralph Frisbie, Frank Hood, Mel Moody, Earl Nelson, Clarence and John Rowley serving as palbearers. The tragic deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Shike Saturday night was a shock to their relatives and friends. Surviving them are four children, Merlin Shike and Mrs. Frank Hood, Jr., of Seaton, and Everett Shike and Mrs. George Greer of Monmouth and eight grandchildren. Mr. Shike also leaves his aged mother, Mrs. Capitola Shike in Keithsburg and three brothers, George of Monmouth, Lester of Keithsburg and Harold of Seaton. Mr. Shike was born May 6, 1888, at the Shike home south of Seaton. He graduated from Seaton high school and Brown's business college. March 12, 1912, he was married to Miss Ellen Morehead. They resided in the Seaton comunity for 20 years and for the past seven years had lived near Fall Creek and Little York. Mrs. Shike was born at Lincoln, Nebraska, September 29, 1890, and was reared from childhood by Mrs. Hattie Reed at Evanston, where she graduated from Northwestern academy and later Monticello, Indiana college and taught in rural schools in Henderson and Mercer counties. She is also survived by a sister and brother, Mrs. Ruth Houthy at Fresno, CAlifornia, and Nelson Morehead at Columbus, Ohio. Both Mr. and Mrs. Shike were members of the Belmont church. |
