JONATHAN HERNDON KILLED

Near 1 o'clock last Sunday morning Jonathan Herndon was struck by a car as he was walking on Highway 63 near one mile east of Houston.  Herndon was drinking some that afternoon and evening and was picked up by one car on the highway south of Houston and brought to town.  He must have started out east later for several cars passed him as he was walking on the highway, but there seemed to be a difference of opinion as to the direction he was traveling.  At near 1 a.m. a car occupied by a group of young people, car owned by John Hill, and Hill doing the driving, came along the highway.  Herndon was struck by this car and was so badly injured he died shortly afterwards.  The remains were brought to the Elliott Funeral home and prepared for burial.
An inquest was held Sunday forenoon but was continued over to Monday, and completed before a jury in Coroner Womack's court Monday afternoon.  Jury retured verdict that Jonathan Herndon died on the 19th of December, 1937, that he came to his death by being struck by and automobile driven by John Hill, signed by G. F. Romines, Foreman.
Jonathan Uriah Herndon was born in Texas County, Missouri, and was 60 years, 4 months and 16 days of age at time of death.  He was a son of Thomas D. and Mary Herndon, and is survived by one daugher in Colorado, one brother, Simeon Herndon, here; one sister, Mrs. Allen, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. Biram, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and other relatives.
Funeral and burial at Ozark Monday afternoon.
