| West Plains Daily Quill Sept. 23, 2003 Goldie Hicks services held Funeral services for Goldie Mae Hicks, 74, Gardner, Kan., and formerly of West Plains, were 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel. Mrs. Hicks died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 26, 1929, at Sargent, the daughter of Orville and Maggie (Hatfield) Collins. She attended high school in West Plains and graduated from Blue Bonnett School of Cosmetology in Springfield in 1949. On Feb. 19, 1949, she was married at Salem, Ark., to Bill Hicks and was a loving wife for 54 years. They moved to Kansas City in 1956. She and her husband shared a special relationship with Lois and Ben Hicks, as the two sister married two brothers and lived next door to each other for more than 50 years. Goldie and Bill Hicks shared in raising two special children. Debbie and Ben Jr. children of Ben and Lois Hicks. The brothers owned and operated Hicks Brothers Chevrolet for 31 years. Mrs. Hicks was a beautician and worked at Plaza Beauty Salon for 16 years. She also was a homemaker and dearly loved her family. She loved her garden, her yard and quilting, was the "world's best cook," and was loved by, and will be dearly missed by, everyone who knew her. She was a member of the Baptist Church of West Plains. Survivors include her husband, Bill Hicks, of the family home; her sisters, Wanda Altermatt and husband, Roy, Willow Springs, and Becky Watkins, Pomona; her brother, Roy "Sonny" Collins, Pomona; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben Sr. and Marianna Hicks, West Plains; brother-in-law, Jim Hicks, Springfield; a very special niece, Debbie Gray and husband, Bill, Overland Park, Kan.; nephews Ben Hicks Jr. and wife, Joy, Arlington, Texas, Randy Crow and wife, Abby, Spring Lake, Mich., and Robin Siemans, Kansas City; and many other nieces, nephews, friends and family members whom she dearly loved. Her family wishes to especially thank her loving nurses who cared for her at St. Luke's Cancer Institute. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lois Hicks and June Crow; her brother Robert Collins; and her special aunt, Carrie Andrews. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Gardens. |
