| First, a little history. We kicked this program off in the summer of 2002 after Dr. Faries of Texas A&M met with a very large group of eager 4-Hers! We now have two years under out belt and are in the midst of enrolling a third group for their very first year! This summer has been a little bit crazy trying to get three separate groups on track for the upcoming year, but if everyone will continue to be patient, I'm sure we are headed for another fun, informative year for all!! And now, about our program. In Johnson County, Vet Science is a three year program based on the Veterinary Assistant Handbook by Floron C. Faries, Jr., DVM, MS. (about $35 at the extension office) Although recommended for older 4-Hers, many of our first year participants were 5th and 6th graders. We incorporate guest speakers and field trips to local veterinary clinics with the text material to keep the course interesting. Upon completion of this project and a specified number of volunteer and/or work hours, participants are eligible for certification through the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. For more information on how to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant vist the TVMA website, http://www.tvma.org. Are you interested? To get started, you must enroll at a regular meeting between June and August. We are currently enrolling a new group. To join, attend the July 28th meeting at the United Cooperative Services building at I-35 and Bethesda just south of Burleson at 7:00pm. We are planning a field trip for the August meeting so be sure to check the calendar for the time and place of the August meeting. If you miss the August deadline, don't worry. Another group will start up again next summer. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month, mostly at the United Cooperative Services community room on I-35 and Bethesda south of Burleson at 7:00pm. However, be sure to check the calendar before each meeting date for field trips to be sure you are in the right place at the right time!. We will be taking a break during the stock show season in February and March. Do you have questions? Call the extension office and ask for leader phone numbers or send us an e-mail. |
