| Raised in New York by her mother, a former opera singer and vocal coach, Mariah started singing at age four, and writing songs by junior high. Not long after she graduated from high school, Mariah's singing back up for Brenda K. Starr ultimately led to her signing with Columbia Records. As millions listened and watched, she christened her recording career with 1990's self-titled Mariah Carey CD, which ultimately produced four Number One singles ("Vision Of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry"), eventually selling more than 12 million LP's worldwide. Mariah received 1990 Grammy's for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Female ("Vision of Love"). The same year, Mariah picked up three Soul Train Awards: Best New Artist, Best Album (Mariah Carey) and Best Single, Female ("Vision of Love"). A perennial favorite at the American Music Awards, Mariah won Favorite Female Artist/R&B in 1992; Favorite Female Artist, Pop/Rock and Favorite Album, Adult Contemporary in 1993; Favorite Female Artist, Pop/Rock in 1995; and Favorite Female Artist, Pop/Rock and Favorite Female Artist, Soul/R&B in 1996. Mariah picked up her first Billboard Awards in 1991 for Top Adult Contemporary Artist, Top Pop Artist, Top Album Artist, Top Pop Singles Artist, and Top Pop Singles Artist/Female. In 1996, she won a Billboard Award for Hot 100 Singles Artist of the Year and, with Boyz II Men, a Special Hot 100 Singles Award for "One Sweet Day." At the 1998 World Music Awards ceremony, Mariah won an award for Best Selling R&B Artist and the Legend Award for World's Best Selling Recording Artist of the 1990's. She won her first World Music Awards - World's Best Selling Pop Artist, World's Best American Recording Artist, and World's Overall Best Performing Artist - in 1995. The following year, she was presented with trophies for World's Best Selling R&B Female Artist of the Year, World's Best Selling Overall Recording Female Artist of the Year, World's Best Selling Pop Artist of the Year, and World's Best Selling American Female Artist of the Year. By the time the decade came to a close, each of Mariah's nine multi-platinum releases had gone Top Five (four have gone Number One), producing an unrivaled string of fifteen #1 hits. Aside from her chart-topping cover of the Jackson 5"s "I'll Be there," Mariah co-wrote all her #1 smashes. As well as being the only artist to have had a #1 record in each year of the 90's, and have more singles debut at #1 (three) than any artist, Mariah has more #1 singles than any female artist ever. Mariah also has had more #1 singles than any contemporary recording artist today - only the Beatles (20) and Elvis Presley (18) have more. In addition to the magnitude of winning multiple Grammy, Soul Train and American Music Awards, she was the first female to witness two albums reach the diamond-certified, 10 million sales mark. With this tremendous amount of success garnered in her relatively young career, Mariah Carey was named "Artist of the Decade" by the Billboard Music Awards, and the "Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" by the World Music Awards. Mariah left Columbia in April 2001 and signed a reported $20 million-per-album deal with EMI's Virgin Records for four albums. In July, when her relationship with Luis Miguel had already ended, Mariah suffered an emotional and physical breakdown due to extreme exhaustion and too much work and had to check in to a hospital. The release date for Glitter had to be postponed. Mariah was released from the hospital in September and the Glitter soundtrack came out on September 11. Glitter was not as successful as EMI had expected and, in January 2002, the deal was canceled by mutual agreement of both sides. Mariah was paid $28 million and kept the $21 million she received when the contract was signed in April 2001. Four months later, in May 2002, Mariah signed a $20 million deal with Island Def Jam Music Group for three albums with an option for a fourth that included Mariah's own record label via a partnership with Island Records. Mariah then went to the studio in Capri to record her first album with Universal, which included collaborations with producers Jermaine Dupri, 7 Aurelius (Murder Inc.), Dj Quik and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Portions of bio from Mariah Online & Mariah Mania |
