Kock Pouch (Continent Ileostomy) --- Construction of an internal abdominal pouch with nipple valve following removal of colon, rectum, and anus. Nipple valve serves to hold the feces inside the pouch as it fills, so that no waste matter can escape to outside of body between drainages.

Large Bowel --- The last 4 - 5 feet of bowel that extends from the small bowel to the anus, also referred to as large intestine or colon.

Loop Ileostomy --- Surgical opening in ileum portion of small intestine. Loop of ileum is brought through abdominal wall to form a stoma.

Mucus --- A lubricating substance produced by the digestive tract.

Mucous Fistula --- A surgically created mucus secreting opening from a portion of the bowel, to the skin.

Mucosa --- The lining of the digestive tract and of other organs of the body.

Ostomy --- A surgical opening, usually on the abdominal wall, for the drainage of body wastes. Also referred to as a stoma.

Ostomate --- Person who has an ostomy.

Pelvic Pouch --- An ileoanal reservoir created from the ileum. Also referred to as J-pouch.

Polyp --- An outgrowth from the mucosa of the colon.

Pouchitis --- Inflammation of the internal pouch.

Proctocolectomy --- Removal of the colon, rectum, and anus with creation of a permanent ileostomy.

Proximal Limb (loop) --- Opening in loop ileostomy through which stool is passed.

Rectal cuff --- The portion of the rectum, consisting of sphincter muscle that is retained after the lining of the rectum has been removed.
