The Philadelphia Rug & Textile Society Presents:
"How the Great Carpets Were Made."

Friday, September 9, 2005 6:30 PM
100 North 17th Street, Third Floor, Philadelphia

Careful examination of classical carpets suggests they were not made with the methods used today. Over the centuries, many different techniques have been used, including working from memory or using some form of pattern guide, which may have been approximate or precise.

Every method of design transmission leaves its own trace, and by observation we can determine which method was used. Observations of this kind can reveal a great deal about the history of patterns, though such

signs have sometimes been misinterpreted in the past.

Join us for a talk on this topic with
Dr. Jon Thompson, author, scholar and presently the holder of the May Beattie Fellowship in Carpet Studies at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford University.

After Dr. Thompson's talk, a wine and cheese reception with a book signing session for his most recent publication, The Nomadic Peoples of Iran. We have obtained a very limited number of his book, especially for this event.
