 Peter Davies is a graduate of the Yale Drama School in Theatre History, English and Comparative Literature Departments. After teaching many years in Izmir, Turkey as well as directing theater productions for the British and American Consulates in Turkey, he fell in love with the textile world, especially flatweave (kilim) and carpets of Turkey. In 1976, he founded Turkana Gallery of Old and Antique Kilims which is presently located in New York City. He specializes in Anatolian kilims and as well as supplying kilims, costumes and various textile artifacts for the permanent Asian Peoples Exhibition at New York's Museum of Natural History. He is the author of numerous articles on rugs and kilims as well as the book: The Tribal Eye: Antique Kilims of Anatolia.

 

Attendees are invited to bring antique Anatolian kilims for show & tell. Attendance to this lecture is open to members of PORS and the Philadelphia Art Alliance members. Non-members and guests: $5.00 at the reception desk.

Recognized by The New York Times and magazines including House & Garden, House Beautiful and Food & Wine for her artistic and humanitarian work, Stephanie Odegard, founder of Odegard Carpets, will be the second presenter in International House’s World Economic Lecture Series. The presentation will demonstrate the economic power of connecting indigenous artisans to the world market in the effort to raise and sustain the standard of living in developing countries.

 

Drawing on her 25 years of experience working for the United Nations, World Bank and Peace Corps, Ms. Odegard is renowned for creating an economic development model based on high production standards, a sustainable, child-free workplace, and respect for cultural diversity.  Her company, Odegard Carpets, works to transform traditional artisan crafts of developing nations into commercially viable industries and, today, her carpets grace the floors of the J. Paul Getty Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

 

After the lecture, you will have the opportunity to continue the conversation at the White Dog Café (3420 Sansom Street) with Nina Smith, Executive Director of Rugmark. Nina will highlight child labor issues in the rug industries worldwide.
