Part of the charm of traditional oriental rugs is the variation in color, "abrash" and design found within each piece.  Many of these variations appear to be arbitrary and "accidental".  However, by examining a
large number of examples and concentrating on specific types, one begins to suggest certain heretofore hidden compositional rules are at work.

This slide lecture will concentrate on bringing to light one of the most prominent of these hidden design patterns - the "internal elem"- which is a representation of a 'compartment' in the lower quarter of a weaving and which often incorporates a discontinuous element. The presentation will show the distinctive markings that indicate this subtle design element and will show that all types of traditional rugs- tribal, workshop and classical, include these not-so-random variations.  This presentation will leave you with a new way to perceive and appreciate any traditional rug.

Shiv Sikri is a rug collector and dealer, and a lecturer in Mathematics at Hunter College, New York and also a Doctoral candidate in Mathematics with a specialization in Number Theory.  As a rug collector, his specialization is in Baluchi.

Also upcoming at Gallery51, the Exhibition, and Pattern as Message: Antique Kilims -Traditional Flat woven Rugs of the Near East, opens on First Friday, November 7. This special exhibition and sale is being sponsored in conjunction with renowned dealer and collector, Dennis Dodds, of Philadelphia, and will feature select pieces from his inventory. A special opening reception will take place at the gallery on Wednesday, November 5, from 6 - 8 pm., 51 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia. All PORS members are invited to attend.

Following PORS meeting announcement:

Ms. Olga Bush to present: "Alhambra and the Textiles: Decoration, Space, and Articulation of Court Ritual in Islamic Andalucia."

Sedgwick Cultural Center,
7137 Germantown Avenue

Philadelphia, PA 19119

(215) 248-9229

   On December 3rd, 2003 at 5:00 P.M

Special Exhibit: EYEDAZZLERS: The Two-Century Romance of Navajo Weaving and Germantown Yarn.

The presentation of Ms. Bush will concentrate on Nasrid (Spanish) Textiles.
She has lived in Spain and is an expert in the Islamic Textiles Arts of Spain. Ms. Olga Bush studied at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University and is currently holding a Kevorkian Curatorial Fellowship, spending her time at the Department of Islamic Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y.C. You will be fascinated by the subject and the relationship of Textiles and Architecture of the Alhambra.

As a double treat (call it a Christmas or New Year Bonus), we will have the pleasure to view the very special exhibit of Eye Dazzlers. This is an exhibit not to miss since it is part of Philadelphia's or specifically Germantown history and Navajo weaving; maybe an unlikely relationship until you see

the exhibit! Many thanks are due to Joan and Aron Fisher for making the special
arrangement.
