Kilim Weaving in the Caucasus

Irene Koshoridze is the Director of the Asian Department at the Georgia State Museum of Fine Arts.  Her dissertation was on the Tusheti and Khevurseti kilims.  She found 200 examples in Alvani, of which several were placed in the museum. She developed a Golden Fleece project to revive carpet production, which was successful, but short lived due to economic conditions in Georgia. Her article describing the carpets in the museum's  collection is found in Tapis de Georgie Chefs -S Oeuvres Des Musees de Tbilissi, published by the Asslciation Francaise Culturelle et d'Amitie avec le Peuple Georgien, a publication which will be available for purchase.  She is a member of the Textile Society in Tbilisi, Georgia, which has sponsored three international conferences, the most recent being in the fall of 2001.

Dr. Koshoridze is currently on a Fulbright Research Grant at NYU, in Museum Development. She formerly was in the USA in 2001 on an IPLEMA grant administered by AAM and the Department of State, in an exchange with a museum in New Hampshire.  She provided lectures for the Textile Museum in Washington's tour to the Caucasus, which is how we met.  Irena invited me to collaborate with her on addressing policy and practice in their museum, to develop their collection's potential, throughout the past year.  A small article by Janet Roberts about The Tusheti kilims and Irena's role in their research will appear in HALI and an offprint will be available at the lecture

Please bring your Caucasian kilims!

CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS

Jerry Bulyk has taken over newsletter responsibilities. Many thanks to Pat Suplee for producing them since our beginning!  Other PORS Steering Committee responsibilities remain as before, including Samy Rabinovic keeping track of our membership & providing the mailing labels and Aron Fisher serving as Treasurer.  Arranging for speakers continues to be initiated by Samy, myself and a few other Steering Committee members. We do need someone undertake audio/visual responsibilities and another to arrange for event sites. As I have mentioned to some of you, the Chairman needs relief.  I certainly have enjoyed my role in the forefront of Philadelphia Oriental Rug Society activities but after well over three years it is time for a change. Perhaps early in 2003 PORS could select a new Chairman.
