The Philadelphia Rug &
Textile Society Presents: Thursday, November 10th,
2005 6:30 PM |
Transylvania, the land of Dracula, is also the repository of the richest and best preserved corpus of Turkish carpets outside the Islamic world. Why so many Ottoman rugs are in the Lutheran Churches of the Saxon community in Transylvania is a mystery. |
Attempts to explain this mystery have ranged from the incomplete to the eccentric. A new book, Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania, explores these theories. The book also offers a succinct account of Transylvania's turbulent history, and examines the Ottoman rug trade and the ways these rugs were used and valued. |
| Join us as the book's author, Alberto Boralevi, discusses these Transylvanian mysteries and matters on Wedneday, November 9th. Boralevi, a lifelong Florentine, is an architect, a scholar, and the Academic Chairperson for the upcoming ICOC Conference in Istanbul in 2007. He is based at Palazzo Frescobaldi, in the heart of Florence, the antique dealers' area, on the left bank of the river Arno. |
