Ms. Elena Tzareva will present:

"Turkmen Carpets: Tribal Messages from the Past."

Elena Tzareva’s lecture will be at 5PM in Room 306 of the University of Pennsylvania's Fisher Fine Arts Library. Elena's presentation will be in conjunction with a Jan 16th thru Apr 4th exhibition of Turkmen carpets, bags and trappings, "Antique Rugs of the Turkmen Tribes, Masterpieces from Philadelphia Collections" organized by Dennis Dodds. Dennis has selected 35 top pieces including eight main carpets for this exhibit which is being held in the Arthur Ross Gallery located in the Fisher Fine Arts Library building at 220 South 34th Street. The entrance to this large red stone building is on the opposite side in the campus quad.


Elena Tzareva who has previously presented a lecture for the Philadelphia Oriental Rug Society is the Curator of Textiles at the
Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg. She is the author of "Rugs and Carpets from Central Asia, the Russian Collection" as well as "Carpets of Central Asian Nomads"


A reception will be held in the
Arthur Ross Gallery following Elena's talk. Jerry Sorkin has been kind enough to host this event. Elena's lecture and the exhibition are open to the public.

Upcoming PORS Events:

On March 18th Dr. Harald Bohmer, recognized throughout the Oriental rug community as a preeminent expert on color and natural dyes will present "Natural Dyes-Synthetic Dyes, What Is and Makes the Difference?" In the 1983 Dr. Bohmer with Werner Bruggemann co-authored "Rugs of the Peasants and Nomads of Anatolia, the authoritative resource on the chemical and botanical investigation of the colors in Anatolian rugs. He has recently authored "Koekboya, Natural Dyes and Textiles".

 

Call for Volunteers:

We need one, preferably two, volunteers to be in  charge of our Audio-Visual equipment/ The person(s) in charge will be responsible for bringing the equipment to the meeting and setting it up. Please call Samy Rabinovic (215) 860-8869 if you are seriously interested.

The Philadelphia Oriental Rug Society is a non-profit organization offering its members opportunities to enrich their knowledge and appreciation of hand-knotted carpets.  Annual membership dues are $35 for single and $55 for a couple, payable in January of each year.
