Time: Wednesday

Special Exhibit:
EYEDAZZLERS: The Two-Century Romance of Navajo Weaving and Germantown Yarn.
The presentation of Ms. Bush will
concentrate on Nasrid (Spanish) Textiles. Ms. Bush has lived in Spain
and is an expert on the Islamic Textile Arts of Spain. She has studied at the Institute
of Fine Arts at New
York University
and is currently holding a Kevorkian Curatorial Fellowship, spending her time
at the Department of Islamic Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and N.Y.C. You
will be fascinated by the subject and the relationship between Textiles and
Architecture of the Alhambra.
As a double treat (call it a Christmas, Chanukah &
New Year Bonus), we will have the pleasure to view the very special exhibit “Eye
dazzlers”.
This is one exhibit not to be
missed since it is part of Philadelphia's,
or to be more specific, Germantown’s
history and how it relates to Navajo weaving; maybe an unlikely relationship
until you see the exhibit! Many thanks are due to Joan and Aron Fisher for
making the special arrangement. We will have an informal end of year
celebration. I hope that all of you will attend this special event.
SPECIAL EXHIBIT
IN ISTANBUL:
Josephine
Powell Kilims Exhibition in Istanbul
By Ronald and Selma Newburgh (Members of New England Rug Society; Courtesy of
the NERS)
While in Istanbul recently, we noticed several articles in the Turkish newspapers on an
exhibit of Anatolian kilims in early September. To our delight, the exhibit was
of some 40 kilims donated to Turkey by Josephine Powell. The collection is truly staggering, both
visually and aesthetically. The kilims were shown in three rooms, arranged
according to their region of origin—western, central, and eastern Anatolia. The old rule of Turkish weaving was very
evident: as one goes east in Anatolia,
the palette goes from lighter to deeper, more intense colors. (Case in point: compare
a Bergama or Milas piece with a Kurdish piece from Kars.) All the pieces were well displayed,
mounted on boards, and labeled intelligently in Turkish and English with
information about their structure. There were so many pieces that it is
difficult to single out any. However, two Yüncüs with
their strong graphics in blue and red and a classic Malatya stay in mind.
