Samuel Tindall
Circa 1792 - 1856

Samuel Tindall was born in Clarendon County, South Carolina, about 1792.

On November 9, 1816, for $226.00, Samuel Tindall of Clarendon County, South Carolina, purchased 113 acres of land on Big Branch of Jack's Creek, waters of the Santee, from Daniel Brunson of Clarendon County (Sumter County Court House, Book G, Page 353).  Witnesses were R. S. Gerald and James Tindal.

About 1813, Samuel married (first) Margaret (her last name has not been recovered), who was born about 1795.

According to the 1830 Census of Sumter District, South Carolina, Samuel was born between 1790 and 1800.  There was one male born between 1810 and 1815, one male born between 1815 and 1820, two males born between 1820 and 1825, and two males born between 1825 and 1830. There was a female born between 1790 and 1800 and two females born between 1825 and 1830.  Samuel's neighbors included John Tindall (deceased), John H. Boyd and Robert Thames.

On November 1, 1834, for $1,800.00, Samuel Tindall, Sr. purchased 535 acres on the north side of Hawkins Branch, waters of Black River, from Richard F. Manning and his wife (Sumter County Court House Book I, Page 297).  Witnesses were J. H. Stukes and F. C. Richardson.

On January 31, 1835, Samuel Tindal of Clarendon County, Sumter District, South Carolina, sold 107 acres of land on Big Branch of Jack's Creek to Henry F. Tindall of Clarendon County for $550.00.  This land was bounded on the north and northeast by land of Robert Thames, on the south by land of S. Andrews and on the west by the Estate of John Tindall.  This transaction was witnessed by John W. Tindall and L. F. Rhame.  Margaret Tindal signed her dower (Sumter County Court House, Book II, Page 91).

Margaret probably died about 1840 after the birth of her last child, Wade H. Tindall.  After Margaret's death, Samuel married (second) Elizabeth (her last name has not been recovered).  She was born in South Carolina about 1799.

On October 25, 1847, Samuel Tindall loaned Samuel J. Tindall $1,000.00 and took a mortgage on four acres of land in Manchester, South Carolina (Sumter County Court House, Book MM, Page 467).  Samuel J. Tindall had purchased this land from William F. Gordon.

On February 8, 1848, Sheriff Thomas J. Wilder sold four or five acres of land in Manchester to Samuel Tindall for $5.00 (Sumter County Court House, Book N, Page 523).  This property had belonged to Samuel J. Tindall.

(age 25), Margaret (age 23), and Richard W. (age 14).  All those in the household were born in South Carolina. Neighbors included Susan E. and James A. Harvin, Mary Jane and William M. Reese, and Delilah Boyd. Eliza died sometime after the 1860 Census.  Note: It appears that Richard W. Tindall (age 14) was the grandson of Samuel Tindall
