We told you first!
As rumoured in our August edition, Bali's first airline Air Paradise International will now commence services to Australia. The inaugural flight will be on October 27,  to Perth, Western Australia. The airline will fly non stop from Bali to Perth 4 times a week, Melbourne 3 times and Jakarta 3 times. the flights will be operated by a leased Airbus A310. A second Airbus 310 will be added soon. With new flights to Singapore and other Asian destinations.
Air Paradise A310
$534 DPS-MEL-DPS
While fares ex-Perth and Melbourne have yet to be formally announced, Air Paradise will offer special introductory prices for travel commenced and completed by December 15, 2002, flying Denpasar- Perth- Denpasar for only $356. The fare Denpasar- Melbourne- Denpasar during the same period of validity sells for only $534.
Something had to give
The Age Sept. 28 (edited):- First, Ansett collapsed and Melbourne lost two services a week to Bali, then Qantas cut Melbourne-Denpasar services from four to just one a week and  Garuda, reacting to the post- Sep. 11 slump, cut Melbourne-Bali non-stop flights to just two a week. Bali fares from Melbourne have been at their highest ever, starting at about $1200 return - even in low season. This is crazy money for a 5½ flight, considering the US has been on sale from Australia for about the same amount and specials to Hong Kong nearly twice as far away as Bali - have recently been as low as $900. The Qantas and Garuda prices for direct flights don't start much under $1300 -Clive Dorman

The Owners
Air Paradise International is the brainchild of well known
Balinese businessmen Kadek Wiranatha (pictured) of G&K Bros. who own the huge Bounty group of companies which include; AJ Hacket Bunge, Bali Rock Café, Bounty Cruises, Bounty Hotel, Bounty Restaurant, Double-six, Gado-Gado, Paddy's Pub, Praja Taxi & the New Bounty Ship. Just to name a few.
The Airbus A310
The Airbus A310 is a shortened longer range version of the classic Airbus A300 two isle wide body airliner. Airbus simply reduced the length and thus the weight of the A300 airliner by about 15%, resulting in a 15% reduction of fuel consumed therefore increasing range by 15%. The cockpit is the identical to the A300 allowing pilots rated on either type, to fly both aircraft.

Air Paradise has leased 2 A310-300 aircraft in a 202 seat economy and 12 Paradise Class seat configuration. The maintenance of the aircraft is reportedly being done under a technical service agreement with Singapore Airlines.
Size comparison between the A310 and A300-Initially one aircraft will be used, flying around 70 rs per week.

John had 3 parties for his birthday. 1st on the eve at Warung Sobat, then on the day a cocktail party at Ines’ new house followed by a traditional Indonesian birthday party in the Bali French Quarter at the mansion of Robert and Wiwin. John figures maybe he has only 10 or years left so by having 3 celebrations every year, he should have 30 or so birthday parties left.

Robert, Wiwin and  family presented John with a traditional Indonesian “birthday cake” called Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) It is coloured with turmeric and contains many interesting spices. The inscription is in pepper corns. In reverse to Western custom the nasi kuning is cut before the meal and becomes the rice to accompanying the meal.

Walter Spies was the greatest and certainly the most flamboyant painter to live in Bali, his name has become a legend. Born is Russia to the parents of German diplomats, Spies was both a brilliant artist and musician. At the early age he was thrown into the creative maelstrom of the pre-second world war German avant garde movement. Lover of the great German director, Fritz Murnau, Spies was in close contact with Otto Dix and Oskar Kokoschka, both who influenced his painting.
Bali was to give him the freedom to realize his wish. Walter Spies was born on 14 Sep 1898, so he was about 25 years old when he came to Indonesia in 1923,  and about 29 years old when he moved to Bali in 1927.  where he created his best canvases during the 14 years he spent on the island. Often called a surrealist for the dream-like quality of his paintings, Spies' works combine a rich and fluid imagination mingled with Balinese scenes and myths.
While a great painter, his production was limited as he was always busy with countless other projects, such as supporting local arts and artists and co-authoring books on dance and drama. He entertained such luminaries as Charlie Chaplin  and Leopold Stokowski, some of whom bought his works. Persecuted as a homosexual, he was helped by Margaret Mead and her husband Gregory Bateson, who testified that his 'transgressions' were not inconsistent with Balinese culture. He was deported with others as a prisoner in 1942 for holding a German passport. The ship was bombed, and, as the ship slowly sank, the prisoners perished in their locked cells, because the captain declined to free them. Walter's tragic death has only added to his romantic myth.

In a story carried in the September 23, 2002, on-line edition of The Jakarta Post, the possibility has once again resurfaced that the Government may move ahead and eventually curtail the visa-free access accorded to the visiting citizens of 48 nations. Despite recent assurances from Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism that plans to eliminate the visa-free facility had been shelved, the latest press reports indicate that the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Yusril Ihzal Mahendra is steadfast in his commitment to see a return to pre-1983 policies that required visitors to Indonesia to obtain a visa before entering Indonesia.

Road Test
 by Ines
I just love the neat 1499.91cc  Daihatsu Taruna. I loved it so much I almost bought two. The power steering is really nice, I can hang a neat U-turn in Jalan Legian without barely disturbing the traffic.
In my car, the cabin is a totally sterile, sanitary, trash- free environment, why with the very effective sound- proofing, air- conditioning and classic music from the CD, you would never know you're in a 3rd world country. With my pink Kelvin Klein sunglasses on, the outside just looks like a documentary on the National Geographic channel. The
suspension is so, so, so, smooth  you can run over a Balinese dog and barely feel a thing.
Believe me I have done it. I guess it would be just as neat running over a dam Balinese. The acceleration is great, perfect for speeding straight through Balinese ceremonial processions.
The police really admire my nice car, they stop me all the time just to look at it. They are so nice, I usually give them Rp 50,00 for their poor starving family.
My Andi has already built a bamboo carport to shield and protect the paint work from any marks & scratches.

Sunday Sept. 29 Jamal departed Denpasar at 4am by bus to the Bali port of Gilimanuk, where after a short boat ride caught the Mutiara Timor train to Surabaya. In the evening he departed on the Mutiara Seletan express train to Bandung via Yogakarta. His train only arrived 4 hours late, making a total of  30 hours for a 1000 km journey. Jamal was met at the station by brother Deni. He returned home to a big family birthday party. He will stay there around 2 weeks.

Please find attached photos of Ryan which were taken when we were in Lombok last June. He was about 5 months old then. He is now learning to stand up. He can walk a few steps and then fall down! Has 2 teeth already and I think a couple more are coming out soon. It's amazing to see how fast he grows, even for Nini and I, who see him everyday!
