This is a do it yourself tour from Bali 
Taking in Mt. Bromo - Surabaya - Yogakarta

JAVA & BALI
There are 2 ways you can do this tour.

                     (1)   Bali - Mt. Bromo - Surabaya, by local bus.
                             Surabaya -Yogakarta, by train.
                             Return to Bali by Air.

                     (2)   Bali - Surabaya, by Air.
                             Surabaya - Mt. Bromo - Surabaya, by local bus
                             Surabaya - Yogakarta, by Air.
                             Return to Bali by Air.
Of course you can make any combination you wish to suite
your time and budget. Option 1 is by far the most interesting.

 
TRAVEL NOTES
Weather
Bromo gets quite cold at night and in the early morning.
Kit
Travel as lightly as possible, makes travel on public transport easier.
Take some warm clothing for your night in Mt. Bromo.
Take a torch light to navigate to the centre of the Bromo crater.
Take Cash, most small hotels don’t have credit card facilities. Suggest take about 2 million, more if you fly.
The exchange rate is far better in Bali than Java. Mosquito repellent, basic medical kit. Parts of Java are Malarial areas.

YOUR ITINERARY

Mt. BROMO
0530 Taxi to UBUNG bus station Denpasar. Best pre buy ticket or at least check it is running on the day you want to depart. The buss is suppose to depart at 0700 if it is full it will depart earlier, so don't be late. Fare Oct. 2001 Rp 75,000 pp including boat ferry & lunch.
You pay the full fare to Surabaya regardless of where you get off.
0700 +/- Bus departs for Surabaya 

Ferry from Gilimanuk to Java

0900 arrive at Gilimanuk and cross by car ferry to Java.
1200 Lunch at PASIR PUTIH 
1500-1600 Arrive at Probalingo Bus Station Take local Bemo or charter to Mt Bromo
1600-1700 Arrive at HOTEL BROMO PERMAI

0330-0400 Hotel staff will wake you up. 0400 Coffee at the Hotel Restaurant 0430 Descend to the crater, just follow everybody.
Although still dark the track is marked by white painted stones. Bring your torch light. If you don’t feel like walking you can rent a boy with a pony. Organize the night before for a cheaper price.
0530 watch the sunrise, return at your leisure. 0730 enjoy a hearty breakfast 1200 Check out and lunch 1300 Head back to Probolingo, the trip down the mountain takes ½ the time of the trip up. An exciting experience. If you chartered a bemo up the mountain, you can arrange with the driver to pick you up for the return trip. Don’t forget to bargain a little while if you just missed the last one, but sit and talk to the locals and have a coffee, a bus will be along soon. 1700 Arrive Surabaya bus station.

Hotel Staff, friends of mine, HARMID an actual descendent
of the Sumenyep Prince's from Madura. PUTU a Balinese who has worked there for years. HARIM, nice man. The Bus station is in the south, north of the Airport. DINNER Suggest, TRISTAR (on map) Chinese food, walking distance from the Hotel. If your lucky you may see a Chinese wedding. Show time 9pm. Not expensive. Alternative Chinese food take a Becak from the Hotel to KWONG BING. Other interesting restaurants, take a taxi, VENETZIA, old Dutch house, all kinds of cuisine…FRANZ BAKERY, full food service, lots of cakes. ELMI HOTEL Coffee Shop, my personal favourite, European
and Indonesian food.
THINGS TO DO IN SURABAYA
Take a taxi from your hotel:
KEBUN BINATANG – The world famous Surabaya Zoo. HOTEL MAJAPAHIT – The Indonesian Revolution began here, picture gallery in the Foyer. The Hotel was built by the same people who owned Raffles in Singapore. It has been recently renovated and is now run by the Mandarin chain.
MAJAPAHIT RUINS – about 2 hours out of town ask at the hotel if they can find someone with a car or you could negotiate with a taxi, but could be a touch
expensive. SHOPPING SURABAYA Take a taxi from your hotel: Shopping in Surabaya is excellent. TUNJUNGAN PLAZA is the best, followed by
SURABAYA PLAZA and the very reasonable SURABAYA MALL also the computer centre.
PASAR TURI – Where the locals shop, quite an experience.
YOGAKARTA
0500 take a Becak to the Semut Rail Station Best pay your hotel bill the night before to expedite
your departure.
0600 Take the 3 rd class train to Yogyakarta, buy a ticket at the station, seats are reserved. The train attendant will rent you a cushion to sit on to make the
seat more comfortable. Coffee, drinks and food are available on board. The Nasi Goring is excellent.		 1200 Arrive Yogyakarta (referred to as Yoga by the locals) Take a becak to KOMBOKARNO HOTEL Jl. Dagen 49 Yogyakarta Telp. (0274) 515032 or try PETI MAS HOTEL in the same street.
After checking into the hotel, lunch may be in order. Afternoon, find a driver or taxi to take you to Bourbadour, Hotel reception will help. 
BOURABADOUR  BOURABADOUR at SUNSET
Don't forget to check out the KERARTON. JL MALIBRO is excellent for shopping. Dinner the Sosaro district (take a becak or walk) has dozens of restaurants just get lost in the tiny streets and enjoy. Rec'mend SUPERMAN II
Jl Malibro is not much for food unless your looking for
California Fried Chicken. For Lunch there is an excellent food court in Matahari on Jl Malibro.
After the shops shut around 9pm on Jl Malibro the whole street transforms into hundreds of food stalls. BOURABADOUR BAR on the Sosaro side of the railway station is a popular night spot for dinner and /or drinks, open late. RETURNING TO BALI There are frequent flights or you can return to Surabaya and fly to Bali or take the bus or: Take the night MUTIARA EXPRESS from the Yoga Station, the train originates in Bandung and arrives in Yoga about 0030. You can buy your ticket in the afternoon before if you wish. We usually take a ½ day extra at the hotel and check out at 6pm. Take our luggage by Becak to Bourabadour Bar have dinner, drinks and listen to the band till 0000 then wander across to the train station. Train arrives in Surabaya around 0600-0700 You can take the Bourak flight BO 783 SUB DPS 10.00 - 11.45 Call my friend LIE YONG FU (031) 56 74086 or HP 081 831 6087 to buy your ticket whilst first in Surabaya, cost around Rp 510,000 for 2. YONG FU will deliver your ticket to the hotel.
OPTION 2:
YOGA – BALI BY AIR You could buy your ticket whilst in Surabaya. 
Book your ticket at the airline office in Jl Malibro.
