Historic Indonesia
The Majapahit Hotel
 |
| Hotel Majapahit,
Surabaya built in 1910 by the Sarkie brothers, who built the Strand
in Rangoon, the Eastern & Oriental in Penang, and Raffles in Singapore.
The hotel, was originally named the Oranje Hotel &
designed in traditional Dutch period style, was known for a while
as the Yamato Hotel during the W.W.II Japanese occupation. It is best known
however as the site of a major clash between the people of Surabaya and
the Dutch in late 1945 when the latter tried to reclaim their colonial
rights following Indonesia's declaration of independence months earlier. |
1945 The Indonesian flag
is raised at Majapahit hotel.
|
| Now owned by the Mandarin
Oriental group the hotel has undergone refurbishment. Many of the
original original features have been maintained, including stained
glass windows, terrazzo floors and the colonial style balconies &
verandas. |

Here
we are right in the middle of the European tourist season, bringing many
tourists to Warung Sobat. The month kicked off with Nancy's gala
83rd birthday bash (story above) “Sunday Night Club” swings on as
usual with an ever interesting crowd. The Belgium contingent from Jembaran
have been keeping the numbers up. New members Wayan & Ketut have been
batting for the Indonesian side. Ines returned from France. We have missed
Bert from Manly and his lovely Parisian wife, VeVin, they will return early
August. Mrs Oberoi is in town, she has been secretly meeting
with the Belgium crock pot cook. We expect Mrs Oberoi at Warung Sobat
soon. Waitress Wayan has dumped her latest boyfriend, again!. Pak Made
is building 2 new bed rooms in the back of the restaurant, when finished
they will be occupied by Pak Made’s son and father. Jamal is back feeding
the Tokay nightly at 9pm, much to the delight of the tourists. |

John in KL
|
| JULY 10: John
headed off to Kuala Lumpur (KL) for yet another visa run. This time with
Malaysian Airlines service, food & wine was excellent. |
|
| In Jl Petling, (photo)
after
4 pm the street is closed to traffic and within an hour hundreds of plastic
roofed stalls are set up in the centre of the road. Selling T-shirts, watches
and tourist junk. By midnight they all disappear and the street re-opens. |
| While in KL, we stay at
the delux China Town Inn, right in the heart of Chinatown, |
 |
|
| costs $40 p/n for an air
con. room with bathroom, window, Tv with terrestrial Tv + cable HBO &
CNN. Rooms without window $10 less. |
 |
|
Typical delux room at CTI
|
|
| Two doors up from the CTI
is the far more expensive Swiss Garden Inn, but they do, do a great buffet
breakfast for only $6, |
|
| featuring Malay and western
food daily until 1030. You can gorge yourself and save on lunch.
The restaurant does a reasonable set menu lunch for $7, however dinner
is a'la carte and a rip-off with meals around $25, Glass of wine $15 a
bottle $80. |

Malaysian storm drains - It seems quite clear that - "White Planes Can't

| Rumour has it, that well
known Balinese businessmen, Kadek & Made of G&K Bros. owners
of the Bounty group of companies, will start a new airline in Bali called
Air Paradise International. Initially flying to Perth, Australia, they
plan to buy or lease 2 Airbus A310-300 aircraft. The new price of an A310
is around US$75 million or a wet lease (inc. fuel & crew) price
around $470,000 US per month. Flights would have to be operated at least
4 per week to make a profit. The Airbus A310 is a shortened longer range
version of the classic Airbus A300 wide body airliner. It has a cabin width
of 6.1 meters with either 3 class 169 seats, 2 class 222 seats,
or all economy 8 across, 280 seats. Start up date is not known. |

Clive spends 8 hours at KL's deserted airport
| From Clive-
I had a great time in Bali and a long trip home (to UK) via KL airport
where I had 8 hours to spend wandering around looking at the wonderful
construction and layout of the place. Pity there is hardly anybody there!
Attached a picture of the lower level which looks fantastic, but not a
soul in sight. |
