SAVE
THE NATION
The Indonesian Army
launched on Tuesday a major public awareness campaign with a moral appeal
to the people to save the nation, which it claims is on the brink of disintegration.
The Army distributes posters depicting four children of different ethnic
backgrounds, with a caption that reads mau dibawa kemana kami (where are
you taking us?), and a sub-caption selamatkan masa depan kami (save our
future).JP

TEMAN CAFE'
(Friend Cafe')
Jl Raya Kerobokan. The restaurant is
in a modern shop front with a nice garden at the back. The decor is tastefull
and looks very upmarket. I had the lamb chops, more a braised version rather
than grilled, but very nice. Came with a chopped vegetable, mint flavoured
ragau and a baked potato.
Jamal had the Chicken with mustard
sauce. They have an excellent wine list albiet small. A bottle of Linderman's
Cablis $16 (very cheap for Bali) The above meal and a large salad to share,
plus I had Ice cream and 3 glasses of imported winecame to Rp 133,000.($26.60)
The serves aren't huge, but it is
not that kinda place. Sadly the place is mostly empty. KHO Reccomends. |
You probably heard them all before but
nothing like and old line..ha ha After landing: "Thank you for flying
Delta Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much
as we enjoyed taking you for a ride." From the pilot during his welcome
message: "We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants
in the industry. Unfortunately none of them are on this flight. "Flight
attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd like to thank you folks for
flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go
blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll
think of us here at US Airways." ...Jacy |

Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer has announced
Aust Tv, will be back on air within a month under a new tenderer. He said
the channel is important for Australia's image abroad and for the troops
in East Timor to be able to watch the football. The government is throwing
$98 million at the station over 5 years. |
A MEDICAL REPORT has become Suharto's
trump card. Thank's to the medical records presented by a team of physicians
from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) at the Attorney General's Office
(AGO) last Wednesday, which stated that Suharto's health had not yet recovered,
the former president's trial was cancelled. Muljohardjo, chief of the AGO's
Legal & Information Center, said that based on the report, Indonesia's
former strongman is not yet fit for trial. The report stated that
Suharto was actually capable of acting independently. "But, to maintain
his physical capabilities, Suharto needs medications and physical rehabilitation,"
Suharto can perform activities such as bathing, praying, and strolling
around. However, he must still be spoken to slowly and things must be repeated
several times when addressing him. For Suharto's attorney, M. Assegaf,
the medical team's report supports the fact that his client is suffering
from permanent brain damage and cannot possibly be put on trial..JP |
INDONESIAN PHONE
CALLS TO RISE
You'd better limit your phone calls.
The price is going to jump. For the past few weeks, the House of
Representatives has been busy making calculations. In line with a proposal
by PT Telkom, the rate for telecommunications services will climb up to
45.5 percent within three years. "To maintain the quality of service,"
justifies Sarwoto Soetarno, PT Telkom's Vice President. The service lagging
behind lately is the provision of new lines. Last year, there were 863,650
requests for new connections, but only 120,000 were met. The waiting
list becomes longer—and so do the Customers' faces. Consumers may turn
to cell-phones, leaving Telkom customer-less. ....JP |

EMPLOYER
STRIKES BACK
THEY wanted a raise, but what they got
was an assault. About 300 PT Kadera AR Indonesia factory workers in the
Pulogadung industrial area in East Jakarta, fast asleep in the factory's
yard at dawn last Thursday, awoke in panic when they were attacked by 400
unknown assailants. The incident claimed its victims: Kimun Effendi, 21,
was killed, eight were badly injured, and 24 more suffered mild injuries.
At the time, the workers were demanding an increase in wages, which were
seen as inadequate. For example, a worker employed for 15 years only receives
gross wages of around Rp480,00 ($96AUD) a month. The employees had been
demonstrating in the factory yard for 10 days, but the company took no
notice of their protests. The attack came at 2:15am when the laborers were
exhausted and sleeping. Seven Metromini buses stopped and swiftly unloaded
400 people with clubs and sharp weapons. They quickly began the onslaught,
and are believed to have thrown a bomb strong enough to kill one worker
and injure many others. It is known that they were not PT Kadera factory
workers, and are suspected to be hired thugs...Tempo |
