NANCY RETURNS TO THE KHO
BALI: Sun June 2, Nancy (John's Mum) arrived at Bali airport after travelling, for the first time alone from Melbourne, Australia. This is her 7th visit to the colony. A gala welcome dinner was held for her at Warung Sobat where she ate a dozen prawns, headless of course. In attendance was Ines, Clive, Wayan, Jamal & John. Pak Made (Sobat owner) presented Nance with a large bunch of flowers.
KHO BALI: Nancy loves the new guest room at the KHO. She says it is amazing what you can cram in that small room. She loves the air conditioning and is never out of her room - can't wait for the electricity bill.
BALI Wed: Ines, (shortly to leave for Europe for a month) took Nancy for a drive, they went to Café Mocca for coffee, then on to “La Luciola” for cocktails, gossip and sunset. In the evening for a sumptuous dinner at the KHO.
AIRBORNE Melb.. to Bali – Straight after take off Nancy rang her hostess call button. As soon as the nice Garuda hostess arrived Nancy told her to tell the Captain her son is a pilot and if he needs any help she is sure she could steer for him, as she has many times with her son. The hostess thanked her and gave her 4 straight whiskeys.

MELB: Before leaving Melbourne, Nancy was taken by Denny & Bradley to visit Brenda and Barbara. She got to sit in a restored 1940's black Ford Mercury. Also they have the only Ford bread delivery van from that era that is in Victoria, and one of only 2 in Australia. They have 4 all together and keep them in excellent nick. Nance was offered that it could be “her” car for her 90th birthday.

APOLOGY
We apologize there was no news   letter last month. The KHO staff were too busy spring cleaning for Mother Nancy's arrival.
Wine is expensive and hard to find in Bali. Imported good quality wines can cost you AU$ 60-100 in major hotels. To alleviate the situation a small number of enterprising companies have begun making wine in Bali.
The first on the scene was Hatten Wines. 6 years ago they began
by producing Hatten rose’ from local Alphonse-Laval lee grapes grown in the coastal plains of Bali. To follow was AGA RED. Now Hatten wines have just released 2 new white wines, AGA White and Alexanderia sweet white wine. These wines cost around AU$10 in the shop AU$11-22 in restaurants and AU$6.50 at the cellar door.

During his Agronomy studies Winemaker Vincent Desplat specialized in winemaking and is a recipient of a French National Diploma of Oenology, Mr. Desplat had extensive work experience in
the field of winemaking and viticulture before coming to Bali. The range of Hatten wines now include, Rosé, AGA Red, AGA dry white, Jepung sparkling & Alexanderia slightly sweet white wine. http://www.hattenwines.com
MELB: Helen Simmonds AWC, MBE & BAR (retired), has just bought her first computer complete with a digital camera. She will no longer have to drive every month from Melbourne to Sommers just to read the KHO news.
Early May, John was in Melbourne for 2 weeks on a visa run. Whilst there he travelled to Bendigo to see Ian Harvey, Mandy & the kids on to Leongatha to make final arrangements for Nancy's visit to Bali, then back to Melbourne to work for 4 days renovating the house in Somerset St. Met many friends at many dinners including attending a birthday party for friend Mr Bear. Those we were unable to catch up with, sorry, hope so next time.
John has made a new menu for Warung Sobat. Most prices have had to increase by about AUD$20c. Still the most reasonable restaurant in Bali. New entries on the menu: Fresh Galic bread- AU$.50c, Soto Ayam- AU$2, Pizza AU$4-5, Jaffles- AU$1.60-$2, Nasi Goreng Seafood- AU$3, Rendang Sapi- AU$4, Reiberdatchi a’la Hildegard- AU$2.40 also Ice Cream is now available at AU$.80c per scoop. 1 x AU$ =.56 US cents.

To the Banjar
KHO BALI: Last month John & Jamal were invited to a ceremony at our local Banjar. (Hindu temple and meeting place.) Pak Made from Warung Sobat lent the traditional costume to John. Jamal and John were the only non-Hindu's there. Everyone welcomed us and we had an interesting time.
