Because of the small font size and complex format of the Register, I was only able to scan the column of Names relatively reliably. All the rest of the data (unit information, date, grave identification, and remarks) was entered manually. The original 1869 Register is arranged approximately alphabetically by state order within each letter. That is, the names beginning with "A" are alphabetical by state (almost), names beginning with "B" the same, and so on. Therefore, to allow the user to recover the original order of entries, I added a Reference Number (Ref #) column which simply reflects the original numeric order of entries in the 1869 Register. |
