Orbital Transport 168% Upscale
back to Rocketry page
The Orbital Transport was truly one of Estes' most classic designs to come from the halcyon days of model rocketry. Ever impressive in its original size it is even more so when scaled up 168% as I have done. The model depicts a futuristic concept for a re-usable space craft. The Orbital Transport was conceived long before the real Space Shuttle was ever built.

One nice thing about building this rocket is that is doesn't require any fabrication of exotic parts. All the materials used are readily available for scratch building. Both glider and booster utilize semi-custom nose cones supplied by
Balsa Machining Service. The only significant change I made when upscaling was to provide more wing area to the glider. The total area was increased approximately 15% relative to the original. This gives the glider better flying characteristics and much improved performance.

Construction is typical of most large model rockets. Decals were provided by Tom Prestia at
Tango Papa and really bring this model alive. Total weight is surprisingly low; a mere 8 oz for such a big model rocket. Flights are typically flown on an Estes D12-5 for a max altitude of around 450'. The booster recovers via its own 24" 'chute while the glider returns on its own wings.
