An online annotated bibliography of web-sites consulted for my senior thesis on the topic of technology in education
The following links were consulted while I was doing my honors thesis on the impact that technology is making in education. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the educational sites that exist on the Internet but it is a good collection of ones that I found to be well designed or exceptionally informational. Enjoy!
World Wide Web Sites
U.S. Department of Education
This is the U.S. Department of Education's home page. The site contains links to legislation, transcripts of speeches, press releases and other resources that pertain to education.
ISTE
This is the International Society for Technology in Education's (ISTE's) Web site. It contains information for teachers and offers people information about joining the society. The resources that you can access from this site are very useful and are well organized. This site would be of particular interest to an educator looking to learn more about incorporating technology into their classroom.
Engines for Education
A fantastic site created by Roger Schank and Chip Cleary of the Institue for Learning Sciences at NorthWestern University. In the site's own words:
"Engines is a "hyper-book" written by Roger Schank, Director of ILS, and Chip Cleary, a graduate student of Dr. Schank, about what's wrong with the education system, how to reform it, and especially, about the role of educational technology in that reform."
Commonly Asked Questions about the Internet
This site contains answers to commonly questions about the Internet and its applications in educational settings. It covers everything from how to fund the technology and what to buy to examples of projects that can be done using the Internet as a resource.
Apple Education
This is the Apple Education home page. It contains a great deal of information on Apple's past and current involvement in education and explains their mission and commitment to being involved with education in the future. The news and events section "provides late breaking news, events, technology updates, and press releases" on technology in education.
PBS LEARNING SERVICES
"This overview provides information about PBS learning services designed to extend quality instructional programming, educational technology, and related support materials to local communities."
Mining the Internet columns from The Computing Teacher
This site contains a "selection of Judi Harris' columns from The Computing Teacher." I consulted several of these articles and found each one to be highly informative. Reading her articles this way proved to be much easier than a trip to the library!
NCSA Education Program
This is the NCSA's home page. The NCSA "supports a variety of activities to develop and evaluate approaches that incorporate high-performance computing and communications (HPCC) into mathematics and science
education."
American Educational Research Association
This is the home page for the AERA. "The American Educational Research Association is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results." The site is well organized and easy to navigate, and it is well worth a visit.
Educational Technology Links
This site contains links to even more sites on educational technology. Some of the links are referenced in this list but there are some that I have not included that might be of interest to educators, for instance, this link to The Hub, a resource specifically for mathematics and science education. There are lots of good links here that I will leave for you to take a look at if you are interested.

Galaxy Jewels Directory
The name for this site is somewhat fitting since it contains a great number of educational "jewels". It is a searchable directory that contains list to sites on a wide range of different topics. Topics are organized in alphabetical order and the searching tool is located at the bottom of the page.

An astonishing list of links to a variety of educational sites on the World Wide Web.
Education Links
This is another fairly extensive list of sites broken down into "Innovative Learning Environments and Teaching Paradigms," "K-12 Education," "A Web of Students, Teachers, Projects and Resources: Current K-12 Use in the United States," "Information Organization and Presentation for an Improved Learning Environment,"Distance Education," and project expamles in a section called "Posters."
"Technology in Education: An Assesment of the Problem"
This is a report on Technology in education. The abstract reads: "Education, always in a crisis, is facing another rich-poor issue with the infusion of technology into the classroom. Some children have it; some don't. Is this a problem? What is the scope of the problem? Is technology useful? Is not having it debilitating?"
Technologies de Formation et Apprentissage
This sites allows users to search through topics of interest, look at educational software, journals, information sites and even an educational VR MUD! This is a very extensive list of research and contains a literal gold mine of resources.
University of William and Mary's School of Education
This is a neat site that contains a well organized and seemingly thorough listing of websites, gopher sites and a variety of other resources that pertain to technology in education.
Educational Applications of the Internet
In the site's words: "This World Wide Web resource collection presents the results of a study focusing on the current status of the Internet as an educational tool for schools. The purpose of the project is help school administrators form a perspective on the nature and scope of the Internet."
Improving America's Schools Act of1994
This site contains the full text of " An Act to extend for five years the authorizations of appropriations for the programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965." The site is broken down into a variety of sections. Each section is linked by a hypertext reference so as to cut down on the size of each page. This is a unique way to view legislation and it contains a lot of information about how the government is addressing technology in education.
Joe Lounge's "Technology in Education Page"
This site contains a brief set of links to sites that are of interest to Learning Technologists such as Joe Lounge. I also found many of these sites to be of interest.
Institute for Computer-Based Learning
This site, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, has a variety of resources dealing with technology in education. There are online research papers and information about projects that the institute has worked on/is currently working on.
The Institute for Learning Sciences
The site explains the institute's mission. There is information about software and theory pertaining to education using technology.
Computer Supported Collaborative Problem Solving
In their own words: "We propose to study the role of social grounding in human-human collaborative problem solving and to integrate functionally equivalent mechanisms into an interactive inference engine for human-computer collaboration. Our research will contribute to the theory of collaborative problem solving and lay the psychological foundations for new generations of interactive computer systems."

This site contains a list of links to a variety of locations including organizations and online journals.
The Online Chronicle of Distance Education and Communication, April 1994
This contains the full text of April's Online Chronicle. The articles are thought-provoking and well written. Of particular interest was the article entitled "Maximizing the Impact of the NII for Education", written by David Thornburg. At the end of the text there is information about subscribing to this journal.
Classroom Technology
This site contains "some pointers to material regarding technology in the classroom."
RiceInfo collection of "Information by Subject Area"
"These directories contain links to resources organized by subject matter." The site is constantly updated and contains a vast amount of infomation on just about every subject that is related to technology in education. There are even telnet links to a variety of educational sites!
Files on Technology in Education
This is a directory of gopher files about technology in education. Including files about Apple and IBM's role in educational technology.
EDUCOM
This contains a variety of files by EDUCOM including a copy of the most recent edition of EDUPAGE, "a summary of news items on information technology, is provided three times each week as a service by Educom -- a Washington, D.C.-based consortium of leading colleges and universities seeking to transform
education through the use of information technology."
