Follow the Hammer

Flexible casting, approximately 20 minutes)

A bright retelling of the ancient story of the Maccabbees and the freedom fight that created the holiday of Chanukah. Bright, toe-tapping, singable tunes, plus a solid punch of an ending.

Antiochus is puzzled: He is trying to unify his country by Hellenizing all the residents, but one stubborn band of peoplethe Jewsrefuse to comply! But he's too busy fighting a war to pay much attention. However, when a mixed-up communication system sends home the word that the king is dead ("Rumors"), the rebels seize the moment to fight their oppressors. Antiochus returns to discover the rebellion, and in anger orders the Jews to comply with the new rules. One man, Mattathias, steadfastly sticks to his beliefs ("I Refuse"), and angers the king, who seizes the Temple and defiles it with filth and dancing girls. Meanwhile, one of Mattathias' sons, Judah, meets one of the girls, Diana, and as their friendship grows, so does Diana's questioning of her own hedonistic ways ("Judah Maccabbee"). As the rebellion grows, Diana joins the angry people and spurs them on to follow the Maccabbees' lead and fight for their beliefs ("Follow The Hammer"). Antiochus is amazed at the tenacity of the small band, and wonders at their faith ("What People Are These?"). The Temple is captured back, and the people prepare to clean it once more, but discover there is not enough oil to burn until more can be made. Encouraged by Judah's faith, they light the oil and gather to pray ("Don't Let The Light Go Out").
