The Open Relay Behaviour-modification System (ORBS; [email protected]) is now
blocking some trusted servers within the erin.utoronto.ca due to these
servers having open e-mail relays.

A mail server is deemed to be an open relay when it accepts any
message from any host for delivery to locations other than the local host
(itself). This used to be considered a good thing before, however
unsolicited, bulk email has changed that.

*** Please note that the paragraphs above do not refer to mail clients
(such as PCs or MACs running Eudora, MS Outlook, etc...), although they
may be affected in the long run if no action is taken on our part.

This "blocking" only concerns certain mail servers within Erindale College
(not managed by Computing Services) which happen to allow third-party
message relay. The parties affected in this matter have already been
contacted and informed of the situation.

Although credit.erin.utoronto.ca does not allow relaying of third party
messages from outside of our domain, it does allow its trusted servers to
relay through it. Because of that, unless we modify the behaviour of the
trusted servers in question, credit.erin will be on the ORBS blocked list
as an "accessory to an open relay", at least until such time when we stop
allowing trusted servers to relay through credit.erin.

The mail server on credit.erin.utoronto.ca is now in the process of being
reconfigured. We are trying to make the changes as transparent as
possible, however some e-mail problems may occur for short periods of
time while the server is being reconfigured.
