Summary
For this assignment, you will write an employment letter and a rsum oriented to a real job. The assignment has three parts:
- Employment Scenario
- Employment Letter
- Rsum
Employment Scenario
In an e-mail message to me, describe a job you would like to get and the employer.
- Identify a job you would like to get. It could be an advertised position or not.
- If it is advertised, quote the text of the ad and identify its source. (You should also bring a copy of the ad to our meeting.)
- If it is not advertised, describe the kind of position you are hoping to obtain and its responsibilities.
- Research and describe the employer.
For example, in what industry is the employer? What is the corporate culture of that employer?
What kinds of qualities does that employer favor among its employees? What kinds of employees does that employer attract?
How attractive is the employer and the industry in the current employment market?
Write the equivalent of a full paragraph to describe each of the above.
In your e-mail message to me, use the subject line "English 175: Employment Scenario" and paste these descriptions of your sought-after job and employer in the body of your e-mail, not in an attachment.
Rsum
Use the rsum organizational strategy (i.e., experiential / chronological rsum, functional / skills rsum) that best promotes your aptitude and experience for the kind of job you're aiming to get.
Compose your Rsum in MS Word or in a page layout program (e.g., QuarkXpress, Abobe Pagemaker, Adobe InDesign). Your rsum should be at least one full page in length.
Pay particular attention to page layout and design.
If you opt to use MS Word's rsum templates, or another program's rsum templates, you must, in compensation, write an extra assignment: a one-paragraph explanation of the effectiveness of the template's design. Hand in this paragraph attached to your Rsum.
Employment Letter
If you are responding to an advertised position (see above), write a solicited application letter.
If the position is not advertised, write a prospecting letter.
In either case, keep in mind the audience of your letter: the employer you described in the Employment Scenario.
Your application letter should be at least 250 words long.
