Cutting:
The following instructions are for cutting your blocks using FQs. Scroll down for cutting instructions using yardage.
Paw Fabric:
From your dark fabric, cut 2 strips 4 1/2" x 18". Then cut these strips into eight 4 1/2" squares.
From the same fabric, next cut 2 strips 3" x 18". Cut these strips into twelve 3" squares.
You should be left with a piece of fabric about 7" x 18". Cut TWO strips of 3" x 7" and ONE strip 2 1/2" x 7". You will be able to cut FOUR more 3" squares, and TWO 2 1/2" squares. We want to end up with sixteen 3" squares, two 2 1/2" squares and eight 4 1/2" squares total from our FQ.
What to do if your FQ has shrunk during pre-washing and the width is smaller than 18"?
Don't panic. We can still use that FQ to make 2 complete blocks. If your fabric has shrunk significantly, at the end of your 4 1/2" strips, you will end up 6 squares 4 1/2" and 2 pieces somewhere between 4 1/2" & 3 1/2". You can cut your TWO 2 1/2" squares from these two ends.
Now after cutting your TWO 3" x 7" strips from the 7"x18" section, you should have a piece of fabric approximately 7" x 12" remaining. You can easily cut your final 4 1/2" squares from this section.
Background Fabric:
From light fabric, cut 3 strips 3" x 18". You will need a total of sixteen 3" squares for 2 blocks.
Then, cut 4 strips 2 1/2" x 18", then cut 8 pieces 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Finally, cut eight 2 1/2" squares for the corners. There should be enough left from the ends of the 2 1/2" strips for these pieces.
Block Construction:
First we will make HST units from our 3 squares
Draw a diagonal line on the back of each of the background fabric squares. Layer the
3 background and 3 paw fabric squares, right sides together, and stitch a scant
on both sides of the drawn line
See photo below

Once all of your HST units are sewn, cut apart on the DRAWN line and press
towards the dark fabric, being very careful not to distort the squares too much.
See photo below

| ...IMPORTANT...IMPORTANT...IMPORTANT... |
It is CRITICAL at this point to SQUARE UP your HSTs.
The cutting measurements given for the HST units
are deliberately OVERSIZED to allow for trimming.
If you attempt to piece the block without trimming,
your HST units will be too large to match the rest of the pieces.
This step has been included because your points will not be sharp if you do not make sure each
finished HST unit measures EXACTLY 2 square.
There are different quilting rulers on the market to accomplish this. I use the Bias Square ruler
from That Patchwork Place. You will need to trim ALL FOUR SIDES of your HSTs.
This seems unnecessary, but you will be rewarded with perfect points on all your paws by making this extra effort.
The photos following illustrate how to square up your HST units

Referring to the photo above, you will need to trim the first two sides. Line up the diagonal line on
the ruler with the seam line of your HST as shown. Slide the ruler along until your 2 line on
BOTH SIDES of the ruler are slightly to the INSIDE of the bottom edges of your square as shown in the
photo. This is very IMPORTANT, so that you will have sufficient fabric to trim the final two sides.
The photo below shows the completed first 2 cuts.

Now, you will turn the square to position it for the last two cuts.

Referring to the photo above, you will see that the ruler is now lined up so the diagonal matches the seam
AND the first two cuts are EXACTLY on both of the 2 lines of the ruler. Carefully make your final cuts,
holding the ruler so it does not slide out of position.
The photo below shows the squared-up HST.

Refer to the following photographs for your block assembly.

First we sew the paw units, laying them out as shown above.
Sew the HTS units in the order shown, then sew to the 4 square.
***Be very careful in the orientation of your HST units, especially when chain piecing.
It is easy to sew the units together incorrectly, since half of the HST sets will be sewn as
MIRROR IMAGES of the other half.
Always a good tip check twice, sew once.
Once your paws are all sewn, you will lay out the units with the remaining pieces for your
final block assembly and sew together in rows, 9-patch style, as the photo below illustrates

Congratulations!!! Your blocks are now finished.
