John William Bishop

John William Bishop was born in Georgia on 04SEP1860. He ran away from an orphans home in Georgia when he was about twelve years old. A brother had been with him, but the brother died and there is no mention of his name.

He was ordained as a minister of the Free Will Baptist Church in 1881, and on 27MAY1883, he married Texanna Stroud. She was a daughter of Reverand R. B. Stroud and Jane Denton.

The J. W. Bishop family moved around a lot, probably as he preached, for the younger children were born in different counties. Their children were; Margie Bishop, Elizabeth Bishop, John Ruffin Bishop, Ruth Ester Bishop, Annie Bishop, Pearlie Bishop, Buddy Bishop, and Rosie Bishop. Some of the children died very early in life.

John William Bishop died on 29APR1921, and Texanna died on 10NOV1930. They are both buried in the Kirbyville Cemetary. The graves were once marked by large ceadar trees, but they are no longer there.
