Denny Grossman Vacationing at Lake Powell --
8/19 -- 8/26/2001
Week of 8/19--8/26/2001 We bought this boat new in 72.  We have enjoyed it and have gone
to many lakes with Lake Shasta and Lake Powell our favorites.  We really enjoy the
Sacramento Delta also with all the waterways and things to see.  On the Delta
we take our boats from Rio Vista, near where we camp,  to Locke, and old
Chinese town from the people who built all the levies.  We go to Walnut
Grove, Sacramento, Stockton and all over with our boats.  One time we went
from Isleton where we stayed to Fisherman's Wharf for shrimp cocktails and
then under the Golden Gate Bridge.  We were lucky on that trip as we all
three had the same kind of boat which are 17' Inboard Outboad tri hulls.
This boat isn't good in rough seas and the weather was real calm on the trip
to the Golden Gate.
On this trip to Lone Rock, Lake Powell we had all kinds of weather.  Many
lightning storms which are fun to watch.  On Tues. night, 6 of us were in
boat fishing, a few miles from the beach where we camp, and a sudden storm
came up.  White caps made it a slow trip getting back to camp in the dark.
The next night it was raining hard and lightning all over.  We were playing
Yahtzee in the motorhome and a big crash shook the rig.  The next day we
found out that 2 people, about 100 yards from us were outside and hit by
lightning.  The girl was thrown about 8' and the man was knocked out for
about 10 mins.  The rangers were called and they both came out OK.  The girl
said she was still feeling some tingling the next day.
We had cloud cover about half the days so it made it nice as not too hot.  It
is so beautiful at Lake Powell with over 160 miles long and many canyons to
explore - many walls go up over a 100'.  We water ski.  Taught 10 yr. old
twin girls to single skit this year.  Two years ago they both double skied.
The family we were with are great friends.  Both husband and wife are
Burroughs Class of 76.  The wife was the Burroughs mascot.  They have three
great kids and always love to go to Lake Powell.
We have a favorite place to climb up on a rock to any height you want and
jump in the water.  The 3 kids wanted to do it every day.  We fished several
times and the kids caught a 12" and 16" stripper.  One of the twins also
caught an 18" cat fish.  I cooked them all on Fri. night and the 7 of us had
plenty to eat.  Another favorite thing to do is ride on big tubes behind the
boat.  We pull two tubes at a time. After 6 nights on the beach it was time
to leave.  The beach is about 2 miles long with many rigs, jet skis and boats
of all types.  It is one big beach party everynight with campfires and great
music playing at many places.  Some times the partys go on till 2 or so in
the morning.
On the way home we stayed in Vegas so I called seven classmates that live
there and Henri, "Duke" Ducasse and his lovely wife met us for dinner.  We
had a great time with them.  I didn't know Duke much at all in school but we
had so many great memories to share that he seems like a long time friend.
He has plenty of room to park at their place in Henderson, NV. and invited me
to park there any time.  I had a great chat by phone with the other 6
classmates that  I didn't know well in school but they were all glad that I
called. I was glad to have the class list and phone numbers.
It was a good week.   Denny
