Although the styling is really great on the Maverick, engineering was slim at best. The car had no doors and before Mr. Gladwin updated it the following year, it had no hood. The body swung up like a funny car for any major service. The louvered plates on the front fenders were to tune up or add fluids. Several articles were done in major automotive magazines in the 50's. At this time, this, the #1 Maverick, is one of two known, but the other one is beyond saving.
These photos are of our latest acquisition the 1953 Maverick. This car has no relation to the Ford Motor company. Maverick Motors of Mountain View, CA was started in late 1952 by H. Sterling Gladwin. The styling is a throwback to the hey Days of the thirties. Seven cars were produced over the next several years. The company did not fold until 1968
The Maverick is the last boat tail speedster built. The tail lights in this picture are not original. The car is now under an extensive restoration and should be ready in 2003 with the correct tail lights.
