| The Update..... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4/7/2002 Currently, there is absolutely nothing going on, so naturally I have all the time in the world to update the webpage. Figures. My neighbors have the worst barking overgrown chihuahua (and they only thing EVER cute about these dogs is how teeny they are, so this one doesnt even have that going for it) that is serenading me as I type this at 11:34 PM....Our next door neighbor has already moved out due to the dog...but I'm off topic already...This past week, a friend of mine from skating lessons got sick, and couldn't use her front row tickets to Stars on Ice. So, she gave them to me and another friend of mine from skating, and here is us at the show...RIGHT ON THE ICE!!! It was great. Notice on the ticket it even says "seating on ice". In the picture, which was taken by another skating friend of mine, April (see her webpage for more ice skating pictures from the show) you can see Joy and I in the audience...in the very first row on the right hand side, you can see stairs, I am the fifth to the right of the stairs, and Joy is the sixth, and then there is an empty chair, some more people and then the target sign on the far right...I tried to edit the picture, but it obviously didnt work. Thanks Cheryl...sorry about your appendix!!! |

| This weekend, I'm going to a small neuroscience conference in Cincinnati, which should be interesting. I'm not presenting any data, so I'm just there to listen. I'm driving there; the volvo is all up and running again after having to be towed last week (emergency brake cable snapped, which would have been fine except for then wrapping itself around the rear axle or something. I called AAA (they are probably going to drop me as they lose so much money on me in a given year) and they were like "hello Julie...the volvo again? Want it towed to the same place as last time?" Sad, very sad....Then in two weeks, I'm going to Denver for a wedding of a very long time friend, Suzette. Here is where I'm staying. They are getting married in the Rocky Mountains in springtime...sounds lovely. I even bought a dress for the occasion. Then, in a month, I'm going to Las Vegas to visit a very pregnant friend of mine who teaches high school music there, Dani. Here is where I'm staying (I thought about something flashy like the Bellagio or something, but finances and reason prevailed...I'm cashing in rewards points as it is already to afford the trip in the first place...donations welcome, I'll gamble for anybody...). So that is about it for travel for the year here. I'll put up pictures when I get back..I want to see the Hoover Dam while I'm in Vegas, but we'll see...that could make for some great pics! I'm going to come out and say it finally...I'm trying to graduate in October. Hey, it's my favorite month of the year, so why not. Plus I'm not overly functional in the winter months, so best to try to finish before then. Work is going pretty well. I am making a SAGE library now. Poor Dan had to come in and help me inoculate over 100 cultures today, this is not the first time I've done this many. High thru-put is a funny thing when only one person is doing it, I mean, how high thru-put can I REALLY be??? Also, I started running for like the ninth time again. As an incentive, I bought new shoes...very high tech. I took my hillbilly feet to a running store so I hopefully won't get stress fractures this time. I am only at about 8-10 miles a week, so there is much to be done yet. Have gained SIX pounds in the last 2 weeks due to all this exercise. I love my body *grimace* Well, that's about all for now...take care everybody......send email!! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1/24/02 I think they kill horses when they feel like I do. I have this ugly viral throat thingy. Naturally, there is nothing called "sick day" in graduate school, so I still have to go in to the lab everyday, which I'm sure hinders my recovery. *whine* Yesterday, I was in the lab feeding my pancreas-in-a-dish (hey..I have just learned that the plural of pancreas is pancreata..who knew??) with a mask over my nose and mouth so as not to contaminate them. I think it must've looked very funny. On the up side, I have discovered Nyquil. I can't believe I never took this stuff in college or anything. It is amazing. About 20 mins after my first dose, I realized I was about to fall over while washing my face in the bathroom, so I decided I should go to bed. That's the last I remember, until Dan came home like 5 hours later, which was, fortunately, just in time to take another dose...... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1/7/02 Well, the holidays are over. Those are two of my favorite pictures from what seems to have become the annual holiday trip. Dan, the dog and I drove first to Dan's parents house in Grand Rapids MI, where it snowed (as always) quite a bit. It was lovely, but does complicate winter holiday travel plans. Dan got to see several old friends while in town, and we also stopped by Kalamazoo on the way out of town to see more friends. Then it was on to my parents house in Canton OH. Everyone was as usual, way too generous in their gift giving. We are enjoying our new George Foreman Grill quite a bit, and the pets are enjoying their new stuff as well (see the pictures above). Also, I've been working on my family tree (instead of writing my dissertation...) and there are some new things on the genealogy page (click on genealogy above). One of my net cousins sent out a bunch of old Besco family photos; as Dan said, apparently we have been squat cave dwellers for some time now. Naturally, all of his ancestors are these blonde haired fair viking god types. You just can't escape genes I guess!! Also, I saw the olympic torch go through campus. It was very neat to see; plus it was like 15 degrees, so I nearly froze my a** off. |

| This is us on our christmas journey...in the volvo, which had to be towed away two days before the trip. Naturally, it was one of those quirky volvo things, and she lives on still!! It is amazing that one piece of plastic holds a fuse that runs the fuel injection system. If the plastic holder doesnt hold the fuse in tightly, no fuel gets to the engine. It all hinges on one tiny piece of plastic!! The volve turned 205,000 miles on the trip. Which was very comfortable, as we put the back seats down and it was like an RV. Dan bought me lots of great christmas presents, one of which was a rooftop cargo holder. So all of the stuff went up there, and one of us rode in the back with the dog, a laptop playing DVDs and a down comforter!! On the way to michigan, we drove with a turkey and an ethernet switch strapped to the roof, and on the way to ohio with a vacuum strapped up there! Two words: WHITE TRASH!! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Gump opening his christmas presents from the Cross family (beggin strips) with glee...thanks!!! The picture below is Hugo enjoying the kitties new christmas present...the others are just starting to warm up to it...covering it with catnip has helped. After only about 3 days, three of the cats were simultaneously on the tree... |

| NEWS ( or "gossip") * Not much has been happening for a while, so I haven't updated this page lately...but last month was a bit busier, so I thought I'd update you all. * I did finally achieve my open water scuba diving certification...barely. :) I think I will stick to fairly shallow dives in clear warm water, as this should be better on my ears. *I have just returned from two trips this month. The first was to chicago for the wedding of long-time friend Michelle Brickner. It was a beautiful wedding, even Dan enjoyed the long, ornate Catholic ceremony. All went well with the ceremony, everyone performed their functions well (OK...except for one bridesmaid being 40 minutes late to the church...) The honeymoon was arranged entirely by the groom, and was a surprise trip to Hawaii. It was good to see so many friends all in one place. Pictures of the wedding to follow soon! The second trip was to San Diego for a neuroscience conference for 5 days, and then Dan flew out and we spend an additional three days there on a mini-vacation. The weather was sunny and 70 degrees everyday, except for one day when it rained. I think the news said there were 80 car accidents during rush hour alone! I guess it hadn't rained there in about 5 months. Of course, on my first day back in Ohio, just to highlight the differences between southern california and Ohio, it is about 50 degrees and windy and rainy. Welcome home! So, here are some vacation pictures from the trip. There were a lot of navy ships in san diego harbor...while we were there, the Stenis left for the middle east and the Nimitz arrived home. This might be the Nimitz. Then we went to the zoo. They had a big 1500 lb brown bear. Dan also took several pictures of the new baby panda, Hua-Mei. We also met a very inquisitive giraffe. I think he wanted to eat the leaves on the shrub in front of us, and wasnt really interested in us. We also went to an area called Dog Beach...it's an off leash area right near Ocean Beach where dogs, surfers, and people roam about on the beach and in the ocean and on the other side of the beach, in Mission Bay. The dogs loved it. I wish every dog could have at least one day there. One of my favorite things was the Point Loma Lighthouse. The old lighthouse is not used anymore, but it was having it's birthday party, so they open up the lighthouse on this one day every year, and I just happened to be there. So I got to go up to the top. The view was stunning. There is a new lighthouse built just a bit lower on the hill that is currently in use by the coastguard, and is off-limits to the public. |
