| We also got a chance explore the neighboring Yi villages on an overnight trip to the small town of Puge. Puge itself didn't turn out to be the "happening" market town the folks had expected, but was OK for an afternoon excursion. But the next day while on the bus back, we noticed a flurry of activity happening near a small town along the road. People in brightly coloured traditional dress were making their way towards a small town. We decided that this must be the real market we were after. We were clearly not disappointed as the place was filled with colourfully dressed locals of the Yi minority group, one ofthe largest in China. The animal market proved to be my |

| favourite once again. Pigs squealing while being weighed, horses neighing while having their teeth looked at, and sheep and goats prodded on for their wool. The local people and kids as well were dressed in the traditional Yi costumes and headdress, which made for interesting shots. Everybody was very friendly and we spent the whole morning and a good | ||||||||||||||||
| part of the afternoon at the market and in a nearby village. The quaint farming village with its mud homes, and kids with their runny noses always with a ready smile blurting out "Hello" to us in English. The kids with their split pants...(Most of the really small kids babies - 2 year old run around with a split in their pants) my papa says it's to make it easier for them to squat when nature calls. Mummy says she'd like to take a needle and thread and sew them up... (But judging by the fact that there has been a button missing on my shirt for the past 4 months.... I think its a good bet that the little Chinese babies are safe from my mom's thimbled fingers!). |

| The village and market were a photographer's paradise and mom ended up exhausting her last roll of film. At this point we hopped on the next bus back to Xichang. | ||||||||||||||||
