Colorado - July, 2001
On the way out to Colorado we stopped to visit with friends Bette and Jim Quigley who showed us around Cleveland and South Bass Island in Lake Erie, where Admiral Perry defeated the British and turned the tide of the War of 1812.
We also stopped at the Platte River Monument in Nebraska where we learned much about the pioneers who travelled west along this route.
Taking a few days to so some sightseeing, we spent several hours at Royal Gorge, awed by the natural beauty and man made structures spanning this site.
We just had to stop along the road and take this picture. Isn't it wonderful?
Scenes of the Durango-Silverton Train and the Animas River Valley that it traveled through.
On our way back to Parker we visited Great Sand Dunes National Monument at the base of the Rockies. Being beach people we were amazed at the size of these dunes, among the highest in the country.
As we headed home to New Jersey, we stopped in Independence, Missouri to tour the Truman Home and Library. We also had the opportunity to tour the Temple that is headquarters of the Reorganized Church of Later Day Saints, a branch of the Mormons.
. Were we ever surprised to see Harry himself who still had a copy of the newspaper declaring Dewey winner of the election. He reminded us that NJ had not supported him but we said that if we had been old enough, we certainly would have voted for him ourselves.
