ITALY   April - May 2002
Rome is an amazing city with so many ancient ruins and beautiful churches that you can't walk a block with stopping to wonder at the sights around you. It doesn't take much to imagine walking down the street and seeing Ceasar riding by in a chariot or picture the senate debating in the Forum
From Rome we headed south to see the ruins of  Pompeii with Vesuvius as a forbidding backdrop, and the natural beauty of Capri and the coast of Sorrento.
Then it was north again, through the rolling hills of Umbria to Venice, a city that seemingly floats on water and fills you with wonder.
Each turn brought us to new piazzas with their impressive fountains and/or towering columns.  Behind every church door were magnificant ceilings and breathtaking works of art.  To guarantee that we will return to Rome we threw our coins in Trevi Fountain.
After a stop in the Lake Region we drove on to Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.  This city is a treasure trove of sculpture and art.  Here are just a few of the statues to be seen around the piazzas of the city.
A little rain did not stop us from enjoying Pisa.  We felt lucky to be there after they had removed all the supporting cables to the tower, allowing us an unobstructed view of this lovely structure.  By straightening out the tower by .5 degrees they turned back the clock over 200 years.
Here are views of Assisi, Sienna and San Gimignano, three unique and historic hill towns located in the regions of Umbria and Tuscany.
