GROUND ZERO
As you approach Manhattan from the south on the Staten Island Ferry you see the gaping hole in the skyline and then you notice the cranes being used to clear up the remains of the World Trade Center site.
The scarred and dented globe that used to sit in the World Trade Center Plaza is now located in Battery Park and has become a memorial to those lost on September 11.
Saint Paul's Church on Broadway and Fulton St is where rescue workers go to rest and find a little peace. The fence surrounding the church has become a solid wall of of mementos left by those who visit the site.
Rescue work went on night and day until the final beam was removed at the end of May, 2002. Then the workers moved into the surrounding buildings.
The Towers of Light, a very moving sight on the Manhattan skyline. This picture and several others on this page, was taken by our friends, Dot and Tony Olivieri, on one of two trips the four of us took to pay our respects at Ground Zero.
Early in the rescue operation workers found a piece of steel beam in the shape of a cross. This cross remained at the rescue site until the last of the wreckage had been removed.
Looking north up West Street you can see the dump trucks lined up to take away the tons of debris from the pile of rubble that stood 7 stories high, all that was left of the 105 story twin towers.
