Lesson Plan: The Crucible

Junior English

DAY                                        ACTIVITY

Monday:                Begin with class discussion of the Salem Witch Trials; ask students what they know, etc. Then, make introduction of the book with The Crucible Video short. Pass out books. Read Act I Scene I together (assign parts) so that students can get a feel for the book and ask initial questions. (Duration: Approx. 1 Hour) Homework: Finish Act I.

Tuesday:               Begin class with discussion of book. Include what students do and don’t like about the book so far. Make sure to ask for any questions students may have about the book. Begin reading Act II (using parts) in class. Read until end of class, answering questions if necessary. Homework: Finish Act II.

Wednesday:          Begin class with discussion of what was read for homework. Answer questions. For a little more background, have kids pair up and using my webpage (geocities.com/jbeaven01) have them visit the Virtual Field Trip. Let them navigate that for about twenty minutes. No more! Then ask students to create a web using keywords from the field trip to show how they are linked. This may also be done in pairs. If time is left, begin reading Act III using parts. If not, Act III is to be finished for homework.

Thursday:              Begin class with discussion of what was read for homework as before. Today we will read aloud (in parts) the entire class period. This way if anyone is still unclear about anything they can ask questions. We will pause occasionally to discuss what was just read. Finish book for homework.

Friday:                  Today we will discuss the book. This includes main characters, themes, and we will discuss the evolution of the plot. As an activity to help students understand the series of events in the story, we will then visit http://www3.nationalgeographic.com/salem/ for an interactive.

Give out Assessment, due Monday.
