Toronto

Hey all you crazy JB kidz! What can we say about Toronto.... Well, since the NBM we've had two activities and had a blast both times. The first time we went to the daily bread food bank and sorted out about 800 boxes of canned food. The volunteers at the food bank were amazed at how often they had to keep bringing us boxes. Yay us! We tried to make it into more of a family activity than just JB and the few adults that did come had tons of fun. Then we went back to Graham Durrant-Taylor's house for hot chocolate and a debrief / awareness talk on food banks. Local work!The other time we got together was December 20th for caroling. It was a little bit chaotic, and we were a bit out of tune, but that was to be expected. Everyone had a good time, it was a fundraiser (100$), and it was an excuse to hand out CISV pamphlets. Our next activity is going to be our cookie-a-thon on February 9th to 10th. Our newly founded fundraising committee is organizing it and you're all invited! (Now you're thinking "Yeah right Toronto, like we're going to haul butt over to you for one night." But especially you close places could consider it.) You're also invited to our mini-camp from the 11 - 13 of May. This one is going to be a new experience for the older JB because our exec is running it collectively. In the past we've had groups of two, and sometimes three, in charge. We'd love to see you all! Hugs! CISV JB Toronto

Hey vous autres les jeunes fous de la BJ!Que pouvons-nous dire de Toronto… Bien, depuis le NBM nous avons eu deux activités et on s’est éclaté les deux fois. La première fois nous sommes allés à la banque alimentaire de pain quotidien où on a trié environ 800 boîtes de nourriture en canne. Les volontaires de la banque alimentaire étaient stupéfaits de voir la vitesse à laquelle ils devaient nous amener les boîtes. Yé pour nous! On a essayé d’en faire une activité familiale plus que seulement pour la BJ et les quelques adultes qui sont venus ont eu beaucoup de plaisir. Puis nous sommes allés chez Graham Durrant-Taylor pour du chocolat chaud ainsi qu’une discussion menant à une prise de conscience au sujet des banques alimentaires. Le travail communautaire! L’autre fois nous nous sommes rassemblés le 20 décembre pour chanter des chansons de Noël de portes en portes. C’était quelque peu chaotique et nous faussions un peu, mais il fallait s’y attendre. Tout le monde a eu du bon temps, c’était une levée de fonds(100$) et une excuse pour distribuer des dépliants CISV.Notre prochaine activité va être notre cookie-o-thon du 9 au 10 février. Notre comité de financement nouvellement fondé l’oragnise et vous êtes tous invités! (Là vous pensez "C’est ça Toronto, comme is on allait se bouger le cul jusque chez vous pour une nuit" Mais ceux qui restent proche pourraient y songer.) Vous êtes aussi invités à notre mini-camp du 11 au 13 mai. Celui-là va être une nouvelle expérience pour les plus vieux de la BJ car notre conseil va le diriger collectivement. Dans le passé nous avons eu des groupes de 2, ou parfois 3, en charge du camp. Ottawa

Hola, from the Junior Branch here in Ottawa! We just finished our annual winter camp, which I'm sure all who went would agree that it was magnifique! Our camp focused on what we called 'delving into the mind', which was having seminarish discussions on topics people wanted to talk about, but after an hour didn't. At the beginning of January we crowned the new co-chairs and said farewell to the old. We also swore in a whole new exec. Our new group of very competent exec folk look like a great bunch, the new co-chairs need some work though. JB Ottawa, after some of our JBers participated at a local work/ community evolvement/ good will seminar at the last NBM, is planning on heading more in such a direction; with monthly activities and activities during mini camp. We have already planned an Ottawa canal clean up, where we spend a day cleaning up the surrounding area of our canal. Other ideas have included speakers, seminars and other such educational things. Our next mini camp is going to be held on the long weekend in May - 18th till the 21st. We are inviting all CISVers from across Canada to come and join us. We're trying our best to add a different flare to the event, so you know what the catch is. -Adam Gibbard (JB Ottawa co-chair)

Hola, de la Branche Junior ici à Ottawa! Nous venons juste d’avoir notre mini-camp d’hiver annuel, et je suis certain que tous ceux qui y étaient seraient d’accord pour dire que c’était magnifique! Notre camp portait sur ce qu’on appelle « se creuser les méninges », avec des discussions de style séminaires sur des sujets dont les gens voulaient parler, mais desquels ils se tannaient en dedans d’une heure. Au début de janvier nous avons couronné les nouveaux co-chairs et avons dit adieu aux anciens. On a aussi élu un tout nouveau conseil d’administration. Le nouveau groupe de joyeux lurons sur l’exécutif sont très compétents, mais les deux nouveaux co-chairs vont avoir besoin de travailler un peu. La BJ d’Ottawa, maintenant que quelques membres de la branche ont participé à un séminaire sur le local work, l’implication dans la communauté et les bonnes intentions au dernier NBM, prévoit se diriger plus dans cette direction; avec des activités mensuelles et des activités durant les mini-camps. Nous avons déjà planifié un nettoyage du canal d’Ottawa, où nous passerons la journée à nettoyer l’environnement près de notre canal. Les autres idées sont; des conférenciers, des ateliers de discussion et d’autres choses aussi éducatives. Notre prochain mini-camp va être tenu du 18 au 21 mai. Nous invitons tous les gens du CISV à travers le Canada à se joindre à nous. (Il manque ici une phrase dont je n’ai pas bien saisi la signification, désolée Adam! Waterloo

Lots of great things are happening in Waterloo. After the NBM was over we soon had our Human Rights activity. Forty-five participants showed up to do an activity about human rights. We also wrote letters to our distant CISV friends and played our favourite games. On January 26th we are having a tobogganing party at Melissa’s house where we will enjoy hitting the slopes then relaxing with some hot chocolate and good friends. Of course for the last thing, the cookie-a-thon is coming! This year JB Waterloo will hold the cookie-a-thon From February 16-17. Yeah Waterloo!!

Plein de bonnes choses se passent à Waterloo. Tôt après le NBM nous avons eu notre activité sur les droits de l’homme. 45 participants sont venus à l’activité. Nous avons aussi écrit des lettres à nos amis du CISV au loin et on a joué à nos jeux préférés. Le 26 janvier on va avoir un party de luge chez Mélissa où on va s’amuser à descendre les pentes avant de relaxer avec un chocolat chaud et de bons amis. Bien sûr en terminant, le cookie-o-thon s’en vient! Cette année, la Branche de Waterloo aura son cookie-o-thon du 16 au 17 février. Yé pour Waterloo!!

Vancouver

Hey CISVers,Well things over here in CISV Vancouver have been really really busy lately. We started off the year with elections and are very pleased with the board, which we are working with. Our chair this year is Claire Immega and the Junior Chair is Beth Sully. Our first major event of the year was our fall Mini Camp. There were lots of returning faces and even more new ones. We passed the hours of the weekend with lots of little ice breaking and name games. One of which was Fuzzy Wuzzies which we were told that we had to do from Beth… no if’s and’s or but’s… Fuzzy Wuzzies were going to be happening. We were joined on Saturday by a Native Culture group which lead a healing circle for us. That was very interesting and a very different experience for most of us. However I think that we all walked away with having just experienced an awesome thing. Saturday night was spent laughing at the various members of our board who dressed in togos and other interesting outfits for our Casino Night. The Casino Night was a great success full of lots of games, candy and tattoos. Our latest activity was the not so successful Winter Carnaval. There were 10 very ambitious CISVers who were pumped to sing for the elderly. We successfully sang various Carols and then headed back to our meeting place to hang out and eat. There we also started a CISV Chainletter. So who knows… maybe one of these days you will be recieveing it… HEHEHEHEHE!!!Our JB Board had a meeting today to discuss what we want to do in the future and so far we have some fundraising ideas, our Spring Mini Camp, Cookie Baking and a Multicultural event which we are hoping will be a great success. Well I think that’s it from Vancouver… so we’ll talk to you all later.

Hey tout le monde! Et bien les choses ici à Vancouver n’ont pas arrêté une seconde dernièrement. Nous avons commencé l’année avec les élections et on est très satisfaits du nouveau conseil d’administration. Notre présidente est Claire Immega et notre présidente Junior est Beth Sully. Notre premier événement majeur de l’année a été notre mini-camp d’automne. Il y avait plusieurs vieux visages mais encore plus de nouveaux. Nous avons passé la fin de semaine avec plein de jeux de noms et d’autres pour briser la glace. Un d’eux était Fuzzy Wuzzies auquel Beth a tenu à nous faire jouer… Pas de si ni de mais… Nous devions jouer à Fuzzy Wuzzies. Samedi un groupe culturel s’est joint à nous et a dirigé un cercle guérisseur pour nous. C’était très intéressant et c’était une nouvelle expérience pour la plupart d’entre nous. Finalement, je crois que nous en sommes tous ressortis seulement en s’étant bien amusé. On a passé le samedi soir à rire de notre conseil qui étaient habillés en toges et autres costumes intéressants pour notre Casino. Le casino a été un succès avec beaucoup de jeux, de bonbons et de tattoos. Notre activité la plus récente a été le Carnaval d’hiver qui n’a pas vraiment réussi. Il y avait 10 ambitieuses personnes motivées pour aller chanter pour les personnes âgées. Nous avons chanté avec succès quelques chansons et nous sommes retournés à notre point de rencontre pour manger et parler. Nous y avons aussi commencé une chaîne de lettre, qui sait un jour vous allez peut-être la recevoir…… Hahahhahahaha!Notre conseil d’administration de la Branche a eu une réunion aujourd’hui pour discuter de ce que l’on veut faire dans le futur et jusqu’à maintenant nous avons quelques idées de financement, notre mini-camp de printemps, faire des biscuits et un événement multiculturel qui, on l’espère, sera un grand succès. Je pense que c’est tout pour Vancouver… Alors on vous reparlera tous plus tard.

There hasn’t been much happening here since the NBM * Our last mini-camp was held the weekend just before(3—4 and 5th of November) and it was a tough experience for our young JB board. We did lots of debriefing about it in meetings after and came up with plenty of new solutions and ideas that we can’t wait to try!!! Our next activity will be our winter mini-camp on February 16 to 18th, so far it sounds like we’ll have toooooons of fun there! Everyone’s invited to join us, you don’t know how much fun winter(and cold) can be until you’ve experienced it in one of our mini-camps! Then in March we’ll have our cookie-a-thon, we had to cancel it last year so we really want to do it this year. Towards the end of February our board will be performing on stage for the grand launching of the season 2001. We’ll be miming, singing, acting and kitos’ing to show the new members what CISV is all about. They’ll be amazed by our extraordinary talents! Il ne s’est pas passé beaucoup de choses ici depuis le NBM * Notre dernier mini-camp s’est tenu la fin de semaine juste avant (les 3-4 et 5 novembre) et ce fut une expérience difficile pour notre jeune conseil de la Branche Junior. On a eu plusieurs discussions lors de réunion à ce sujet par la suite et nous avons trouvé une multitude de solutions et d’idées que nous avons hâte d’essayer!!! Notre prochaine activité sera notre mini-camp d’hiver du 16 au 18 février, jusqu’à maintenant il semble bien que nous allons avoir une montagne de plaisir! Tout le monde est invité à se joindre à nous, vous n’avez pas idée à quel point l’hiver(et le froid) peut être amusant avant de l’avoir expérimenté dans un de nos mini-camps! Puis en mars nous aurons notre cookie-o-thon, nous avons dû l’annuler l’an dernier donc nous voulons vraiment le faire cette année. Vers la fin de février le conseil de la Branche se produira sur scène pour le grand lancement de la saison 2001. Nous mimerons, chanterons, jouerons la comédie et kitosserons pour montrer aux nouveaux membres ce qu’est au juste le CISV. Ils seront tous étonnés par nos talents extraordinaires! London

London chapter is up and going, having amazing turnouts at all events so far this year. Our mini camp in October was terrific with 33 participants from (9 to 18). Then in November we went bowling and filled 4 lanes, that is over 28 on a Friday night, late, so we could go "Cosmic Bowling". In December we had our annual Cookie-a-thon where we made 2053 cookies, not bad for 12 hours and only one oven, again a great turnout, most at a cookie-a-thon in years :). Last weekend was our tryouts, and unfortunately most of the kids who came out aren't trying out, but we had a blast. And today, Jan. 17th, we had a games evening, rented a gym and played sports and ordered pizza, 27 participants and lots of fun. Next month, we are having an Orientation Potluck for all the new families and games and jb activities for a Saturday afternoon/evening. Then in March we will hopefully have a Casino night, wohoo. Then our next minicamp, the site is booked and ready to go, it will be April 27th-29th just out side the city at a beautiful site, the whole country as well as all others who want to come are invited, registrations are due the end of March, so keep your eyes open for more information. We have also been in contact with the Detroit chapter and they are going to send some delegates :). London is a busy spot, with the Canada Summer Games coming this summer and lots of amazing CISV JB events.

Le chapitre de London va très bien, nous avons eu un taux de participation étonnant à tous nos événements jusqu’à présent cette année. Notre mini-camp en octobre était fantastique avec 33 participants de 9 à 18 ans. Puis en novembre nous sommes allés jouer aux quilles, on a rempli 4 allées, ce qui veut dire plus de 28 personnes. C’était un vendredi soir, tard, alors on a pu jouer au « Cosmic Bowling »(clair de lune de quilles, pour les québécois). En décembre nous avons eu notre cookie-o-thon annuel où l’on a fait 2053 biscuits, pas mal pour 12 heures et juste un four! Encore là, la participation était bonne, la meilleure pour un cookie-o-thon depuis des années * La fin de semaine passées se tenaient les sélections, malheureusement la plupart des jeunes qui sont venus n’appliquaient pas pour la sélection mais on s’est amusé beaucoup quand même. Aujourd’hui, le 17 janvier, nous avons eu une soirée d’activités. On a loué un gymnase, fait des sports et commandé de la pizza. On avait 27 participants et beaucoup de plaisir. Le mois prochain on a un repas partage pour toutes les nouvelles familles avec des jeux et des activitées de la Branche pour toute l’après-midi et la soirée du samedi. Puis en mars nous allons, on l’espère, avoir un Casino, yahoo! Ensuite viendra notre prochain mini-camp, un très beau site a déjà été réservé. Ce sera du 27 au 29 avril, tout le pays est invité et les autres aussi, les inscriptions doivent être faites d’ici la fin du mois de mars, alors gardez les yeux ouverts pour de plus amples informations. Nous avons aussi eu un contact avec le chapitre de Détroit et ils vont envoyé quelques délégués * London est un coin en mouvement avec les Jeux d’Été

Saskatoon

Hi Everyone. Just to let you know that JB Saskatoon will be holding a family camp August 31 to September 3. We have rented a lakeside camp with cabins and tenting facilities. Everyone one is welcome to attend, but if you are under 14 your parents must be present. We don't know the cost yet, but it will be low. Mark this on your calendar, we would love to have you come. Nous avons loué un camp aux abords d’un lac avec des chalets et de la place pour camper. Tout le monde y est invité mais si vous avez moins de 14 ans vos parents doivent être présents. Le prix encore indéterminé sera bas. Notez bien la date nous aimerions vous y voir. Ce sera très plaisant! Victoria

JB Victoria is up to a lot this year. On December 8th, we had a Christmas party. We decided that we don't get enough purely Christmas activities, (most people try to be politically correct) so we planned a potluck family dinner for all CISV families in Victoria. We broke everyone up into age groups and played games with them all. (For those of you who have never played games with kids' parents, you should! It's hilarious!) From Feb. 9-11, we are having our middle-of-the-year mini-camp; our theme is "The Feeling of Love." We are going to have various activities related to the five senses, as well as a simulation game. In March, we are doing some local work. There is a program in Victoria where you can adopt a stormdrain, and we are doing this. What we have to do is check the stormdrain periodically to make sure that it isn't sending any unwanted chemicals in our ocean, so we get to learn how to test the water. Our village program is doing well, and this year we are also trying to get people to go on interchanges to Germany, Turkey and Sweden. That's all for now!

JB Victoria est très occupé cette année (comme d'habitude!). Sur le 8 de décembre, nous avons célébré Noël avec une fête de famille! On a manger, chanter et jouer les jeux avec tos personnes! ( Si il y a entre vous des personnes qui n'ont jamais jouer des jeux avec les parents et adultes, il faut que vous le fasse; c'est enormement drôle!) En février du 9-11, nous avons notre deusième mini-camp. Nous avons la thème de "Les sensations d'amour," qui lie la journée de Saint Valentin avec les cinq sens. On aura des activités qui utilise les cinq sens et aussi un jeu de simulation. En mars, on èspère de participer en une programme qui s'appelle "Adopter un tuyau d'écoulement." En ce programme, on doit apprender comment si l'eau est sale ou propre. Ce projet est supposé de diminuer le contient des produits chimiques qui entrent l'océan.

I have been to a Village as a delegate in 1991 to Finland, participated in an Interchange with France in 1993-94, and have gone to a Seminar Camp in Philadelphia in 1998.

J’ai participé à de nombreux mini-camps, NBMs(réunion nationale annuelle) et camps nationaux. J’ai fait un village en tant que déléguée en 1991 en Finlande, un Interchange avec la France en 93-94 et j’ai aussi fait un Seminar Camp à Philadelphie en 1998.

Hello JB Canada! My name is Andy Robson, and I am the newly appointed National Junior Representative for CISV Canada. Some of you already know me, but then there are some of you who don't, so here is a little blurb about myself. I first joined CISV when I was thirteen years old to do a two year Interchange with Goteburg, Sweden. I had an amazing time on this Interchange, and from then on I was hooked on CISV. Right after this Interchange, I did another two year Interchange with Sao Paulo, Brazil, which was also really awesome. At this point I was involved locally, on the local board and such, and I started attending some National things like the National Board Meetings and National Wintercamps, all of which have been fantastic. In the summer of 1998 I was Kitchen Staff at a Village in Ottawa, and in the summer of 1999 I went to a Seminar Camp in Florence, Italy. Last summer, I Junior Staffed at a Summer Camp in Calgary, and I am Junior Staffing at another Summer Camp this summer in Toronto. So that is my history, very simplified, with CISV. Outside of CISV I am going to College, currently working towards a Bachelor of Education which would enable me to teach elementary school and would also be great for teaching English abroad. I also work as a cook at Milestones Restaurant, which is a really nice place to work because so many of my co-workers and managers are fun to work with. Bonjour CISV Canada! Mon nom est Andy Robson et je suis le nouveau représentant junior national pour CISV Canada. Certains d'entre vous me connaissent déjà mais d'autres non alors voici un petit mot sur moi. Je suis entré dans le CISV quand j'avais 13 ans pour faire un Interchange de 2 ans avec Goteburg, Suède. J'ai eu un merveilleux Interchange et depuis, je suis accroc au CISV. Tout de suite après, j'ai fait un autre Interchange de 2 ans avec Sao Paulo, Brésil, qui a aussi été fantastique. À ce poit, j'étais impliqué localement, sur la branche junior entre autre et j'ai commencé à assister à des activités nationales, tel que les camps d'hiver et les réunions annuelles nationales(NBM) qui ont tous été passionants.À l'été 1998, j'ai été Kitchen Staff dans un village à Ottawa et en 1999 j'ai participé à un Seminar Camp à Florence en Italie. L'été passé j'étais Junior Staff dans un Summer Camp à Calgary et je répéterai l'expérience l'été prochain à Toronto. Alors c'était l'histoire brève de mon implication CISV. D'autre part, je vais au collège dans le but d'obtenir mon Bac en enseignement qui me permettrait d'enseigner à l'école primaire ou encore d'enseigner l'anglais à l'étranger. Je travaille aussi en tant que cuistot au restaurant Milestones, ce qui est très bien parce qu'il est plaisant de travailler avec la plupart de mes compagnons de travail et patrons. National Winter Camp is an annual event held during the winter break. In the past it's been an enjoyable camp. It has been a great way to meet other Canadian CISV'ers and to share ideas. In 2000 one had been planned to be held in Victoria. Applications were sent out in October so that Juniors could make use of a seat sale. By the first deadline I had received only two applications, but rather than cancel the camp I kept the hope alive and extended the deadline by a week. At the end of that I had received 11 more applications, 10 of which were from JB'ers from the hosting chapter. In the end the camp had to be cancelled due to the lack of participants. Andy and I would like to know why this happened so we are asking you to comment on this to us ( [email protected] or [email protected] or both). Was the location a factor? Was it the cost? Was it Ottawa camp? Was it the fact we had a National Camp in the summer? Was it simply due to family plans? It's REALLY IMPORTANT to us and to National JB to know the reasons behind the cancellation of the camp. Without your help we will not know what to change for this coming year. Thanks!

Le camp national d’hiver est un événement annuel qui se tient durant le congé de Noël. Ça a toujours été un camp très plaisant. Il s’agit d’une bonne façon de rencontrer desgens du CISV de tout le Canada et de partager des idées. En 2000, le camp devait se tenir à Victoria. Les fiches d’inscriptions ont été envoyé en octobre pour que les participants puissent bénéficier d’une vente de billets d’avion. À la première date limite, j’avais reçu seulement 2 inscriptions, mais au lieu d’annuler le camp j’ai décidé de garder espoir et j’ai repoussé la date limite d’une semaine. À cette autre date j’avais reçu 11 inscriptions de plus, dont 10 provenaient du chapitre hôte. À la fin, le camp a dû être annulé par manque de participants. Andy et moi voudrions savoir pourquoi ceci est arrivé et donc nous vous demandons vos commentaires à ce sujet (à [email protected] ou [email protected] ou les deux) Est-ce que c’était à cause de l’endroit éloigné? À cause du camp d’Ottawa au même moment? Parce qu’on avait eu un camp national l’été passé? Était-ce seulement dû à des plans avec votre famille? C’est TRÈS IMPORTANT pour nous et pour la branche junior nationale de connaître le pourquoi réel de l’annulation du camp. Sans votre aide nous ne saurons pas quoi changer pour l’année à venir. With all this talk about an ARM workshop many of you may be asking yourselves...What is ARM? First off ARM stands for "Americas Regional Members." ARM is a CISV Branch that is focused on the juniors from within the three Americas. Since the very first beginning we had set some goals and objectives, such as:
