Mini Camp Recap!

Friday was the start of our mini-camp. We all met at the Westside Recreation Centre, and got settled for the bus ride. The ride was pretty quiet, because there were so many new people! That would change soon! We got to the Camp Chief Hector (after some trouble moving the bus around!!!) and unpacked our stuff (Yeah FunkyBunky!!!) After meeting our experienced woods-friend, Geoff, and going over rules, we were ready for some serious fun!!! We all had an awesome time getting to know each other with the balloon name game and making name tags! We also got our MONITOS!!! The Pirate Game left us totally pumped for more, but it was time for bed. Still, Friday was a great start to our mini-camp, and it was only the beginning.

Just before 7:00 on Saturday, the whole camp was silent. All CISVers were fast asleep in their beds after a fun start to the camp. Mere moments later everyone was gathered in the crisp snow around a flag pole singing the sacred CISV song. The beginning of the best day of the camp had arrived!
Saturday at the camp was launched with an excellent breakfast. Once the campers had downed the awesome breakfast fajita morning feast, we started with some super outdoor games. First, we had a ton of fun running around in the Animal Game. Then we were sent on a wild goose chase trying to find a few people for another fun filled adventure game (Masters of Emotions).
After our super lunch that was composed of some tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, we were then psyched for a big simulation game (Rafa Rafa). After two new nations and cultures had been established, the two groups mingled and tried to make heads or tails of one another. The result was two rather interesting interpretations of the two mini societies.
The next few hours were spent playing some simple games such as a funky traffic one (Highway Crossing and Maze Masters).
Shortly after our delicious dinner, we played games like Jump, Turn, Twizzle, Canadian Box Game (thanks Emily for leading that game), and Honey I Love You. Then it was time to prepare and perform The Three Little Pigs in our specific genre (The genres were Valley Girl, Sci-Fi, Kung-Fu/Ninja, Opera, Western, and Romance).
Then we really got cooking and started in on decorating for the dance. A super CISV like prize of Japanese candies was offered to the group who could decorate in the wildest fashion. Since nearly all were in the CISV spirit of things, we all came out pretty much the same.
Naturally after we got the place all jazzed up we cranked the boom box and started shakin' our bon bons. When bed time arrived several people were burnt out. The few survivors risked the trek across the vast icy field to the other cabin where they sat by a sizzling little fireplace and exchanged some rather unconventional ghost stories.

Cookie-a-thon
CISV JB Calgary is holding cookie-a-thon Friday April 6, starting at 6 pm till noon on Saturday, April 7!

Since Christmas we have had a few exciting activities down here in London. We had a family afternoon and dinner orientation for new and old families in February, which was a great success. As the parents heard all about their responsibilities and the philosophies of CISV, us JBers and siblings watched a video (we were looking for Rainbow Wars, but it wasn't available) and then we had a discussion. Next after a few energizers all the JBers made a "postcard for peace," a card for us to take to the War Veterans. In March a small but powerful group went to Parkwood Hospital and visited with the War Veterans and distributed the post cards we had all made. The end of March represented the time for our first ever London Casino Night. In costume over 20 JBers participated in 5-6 activities, including horse racing, cards, massages, palm readings and a well decorated bar (thanks to Dave) and a few other exciting activities. The night was something bigger than our normal activities and went very well. We are now looking forward to our Spring Mini-Camp which is sure to be a huge success. The weekend again is April 27-29 and is sure to be fantastic, it will be held at the same great site as our fall camp, just outside the city. Depuis Noël il s'est passé plein de choses dans la Branche de London. En février, on a eu un apr`s-midi et un souper d'information pour les nouvelles familles, ce fut un grand succès. Pendant que les parents en apprenaient plus sur leurs responsabilités et sur la philosophie du CISV, nous, la Branche, les frères et les surs, avons regardé un vidéo (nous voulions avoir Rainbow Wars, mais il n'était pas disponible) et puis on a eu une discussion après. Puis, après des energizers, tout le monde a fait des "cartes postales de paix", une carte que l'on va donner aux Vétérans de la Guerre. En mars, un petit groupe motivé s'est rendu à l'hôpital Parkwood et a visité les Vétérans et leur a remis les cartes postales que nous avions fabriquées. La fin de mars représentait l'arrivée de notre tout premier casino. Plus de 20 participants, en costume, ont participé aux 5 ou 6 activités, dont la course de chevaux, les cartes, des massages, lecture des lignes de la main, un bar très bien décoré (grâce à Dave) et quelques autres activités excitantes. La soirée étant plus grandiloquente que la majorité de nos activités et s'est déroulé très bien. Nous avons maintenant hâte au Spring Camp qui va certainement être époustouflant. Il n'est pas trop tard pour s'inscrire, écrivez à mon adresse courriel si vous êtes intéressés à [email protected] . le camp se tiendra du 27 au 29 avril et sera fantasmagorique. Ce sera au même camp que le camp d'automne, à deux pas de la ville. Hey everyone, let's see.... what's new with us? Our last two activities have gone well. February we planned a skating activity at a big rink downtown. Of course the day we planned it for was the only day the weather was nice enough for ice to melt. Instead of a rink we had a big puddle. Nice! Actually, the activity worked out really well. We played a bunch of classic CISV games (off the rink), and all together we planned an activity for mini-camp. The planning was good on so many levels! Everyone got excited about it and all those kids have huge motivation to go to camp. March we went out for dim sum. Much to our surprise we had 46 people come out. That's a really big number for us. We went back to the Durrant-Taylor's house afterwards for a debrief/culture talk. And hot choclate of course! Our cookie-a-thon this year was fun, we had about 35 kids come out. Our JB fundraising commitee organised a ton of stuff beforehand. We had two speakers, one who talked to us about foodbanks and where our cookies were going, and Leigh (our leadership coordinator) talked about deaf culture. Leigh is a teacher of the deaf, and she's starting to introduce some deaf kids into CISV. Everyone had a blast learning how to sign their names and asking a bunch of questions. The dim sum activity was after the cookie-a-thon, and some deaf kids came out to that and taught us some more sign language.

Allo tout le monde! Voyons voir quoi de neuf ici? Nos deux dernières activités on t bien été. En février on avait planifié du patinage sur une grande patinoire au centre-ville. Évidemment, la journée prévue a été la seule du mois assez chaude pour que la glace fonde. Au lieu d'une patinoire on avait une flaque. Super! En fin de compte, l'activité a bien fonctionné. On a joué des jeux CISV classiques et tous ensemble on a planifié un jeu pour le prochain camp. La planification était bonne sur plusieurs plans! Tout le monde était enthousiaste et tous ces jeunes sont maintenant très motivés à venir au camp. En mars, on est allés au « dim sum ». À notre surprise, 46 personnes sont venues. C'est beaucoup pour nous. On est retourné à la maison des Durrant-Taylor après pour une discussion culturelle. Et du chocolat chaud bien sûr! Cette année notre cookie-o-thon a été très plaisant, environ 35 jeunes y étaient. Le comité de financement avait organisé plein de choses avant. On avait deux conférenciers, un qui nous a parlé des banques alimentaires et de l'endroit où nos biscuits iraient et l'autre, Leigh(notre coordonatrice de formation) nous a parlé des sourds et de leur vie. Leigh est professeure pour des enfants sourds et elle a commencé à amener quelques-uns d'eux dans le CISV. Tout le monde a eu du plaisir à apprendre comment dire son nom en signes et à demander une couple de questions. Le « dim sum » était après le cookie-o-thon et quelques enfants sourds y sont venus et nous ont montré encore plus de signes.

Hey, ho! How's everyone? Here evrything is at its best! In late February we had one of our best mini-camps ever! We had a medieval theme and we've rarely succeeded to run a theme as succesfully. We had gravel that we had painted with gold paint and we used it as money and everything had to be paid for with those during the camp. Certain favours to the king could be quite profitable!(don't get me wrong) The whole board was wearing costumes and so were the kids. On Friday night, a little performance done by the staff of the mini-camp set the atmosphere and we divided the kids in 2 teams that competed against each other in games for the whole camp. Of course, they both ended up winning! (that was planned)
It would be too long to explain everything, the story came right out from our imagination so it was very original and incredible. We have a few problems finding adults that would volunteer to help us, but well, we can't have everything Our next activity will be our fabulous and fantastic Easter camp! Four days of fun and pure CISV madness!!! The classics; picking up some easter water, chocolate eggs,etc and a good amount of innovation. We will live in the world of secret agents during the entire camp, our mission; saving the world, nothing less! J A cookie-o-thon should also take place in the months to come. In June, we'll have our annual assembly(and elections) in a mini-camp, followed by the « Roteux » hot-dogs picnic for the whole family. We have more and more kids coming to our activities, which is nice. Other than that, we keep on being our crazy and relaxed selves as usual!!

Hé, ho! Quoi de neuf? Ici tout va pour le mieux! À la fin février on a eu un de nos meilleurs mini-camp à vie! Nous avions un thème médiéval et on a rarement réussi à utiliser un thème aussi bien que celui-ci. On avait de la gravelle peinturée or pour faire des pièces d'argent et tout durant le camp devait se payer. Certains services au roi pouvaient être très payants! Tout le conseil était costumé et les jeunes aussi. Le vendredi soir une mise en scène a eu lieu et on a divisé les jeunes en 2 équipes qui étaient en compétition dans tous les jeux de la fin de semaine. Pour finir à égalité bien sûr! (c'était arrangé.) Ce serait trop long de tout expliqué, l'histoire sortait tout droit de notre imagination et donc elle était des plus rocambolesques et marginales. On a quelques difficultés à trouver des adultes volontaires pour nous aider mais bon, on ne peut pas tout avoir Notre prochaine activité sera le fabuleux et fantasmagorique camp de Pâques! Quatre jours de plaisir et de pure folie CISV!!! Les classiques : la cueillette de l'eau de Pâques, les ufs en chocolat, etc mais aussi une dose d'innovation. Nous vivrons dans le monde des agents secrets pour tout le camp, notre mission : rien de moins que de sauver la planète! J Un cookie-o-thon devrait aussi suivre dans les mois à venir. En juin se tiendra notre assemblée annuelle durant un mini-camp suivi par les « Roteux », un dîner aux hot-dogs familial. On a de plus en plus de jeunes à nos camps, ce qui est super. À part ça, on continue d'être nous, aussi relax et fous que d'habitude!!

Where? It will take place just outside of London Ontario, 2 short hours by car from lovely Toronto; at the scenic camp Sylvan a Boy Scout camp with very nice facilities

When? The dates have been booked and it will run from approximately Aug 19-25th
